94 300tdi def transfer o/haul

G'day all,
Long time reader, first time poster on this site!
Got to get my transfer case o/hauled on my 94 300tdi defender!
starting to get noisy and front output got a fair amount of play in it!?!? (oh and also leaking at g/box input)
Just wondering how much i should pay? have had a quote for $2500 exchange:o from a local shop in newcastle.
So what I'm asking is if there is a reputable shop in newcastle that can rebuild my transfer for a better price?

Last year at the LR expo reco g/boxes and t/cases were going for around $2000 from memory. I'm also interested as just had a central diff lock misbehave today causing me some stress :(

Done some research and;
A low milage 2nd hand unit from triggs @ toronto around $900
A diff and gearbox specialist in newcastle quoted $850 for rebuild

Hi,

If your'e feeling adventurous, pick up a second hand one, buy two kits - bearings, thrusts, seals etc about 100 uk pounds each plus postage. Rebuild the second hand one, fit it then you will be really good at doing the original one. Maybe get a few extra collabsible bushes, in case you get a bit heavy handed - only a few bucks each, but priceless if you need one and havent got one!

For a few slabs worth more, you can get an upgraded crossdrilled input gear, if required.....

And take the oportunity to check the input (gearbox output) shaft for worn splines, result of oil starvation. If this is knackered, not too exxy for part, but a tad more work. Hopefully you won't have to go there.

Whatever you do, don't let the current one run dry. If you do, it will not, under any stretch of imagination, be rebuildable.

Don't believe what Haynes manual says about this box. It is a very simple and straight forward box to work on, IMO much easier than a series x-fer box. Conceivably a days work, go to whoa, for a competent landy owner. Or a few months for a dedicated procrastinator like me!
