G'Day all , my 1972 shorty's pinging has been getting gradually worse so went to do the timing and found that the timing pointer on the frontcover has been removed or fallen off ! Can anyone sell me a new bit or tell me if there is a way to set it someother way ? Dont know how they set it without the pointer. Thanks Buzzy

remove the rocker cover, turn the engine by hand till the inlet valve on #4 just starts to open and set the spark there. That gets you started then just ear it in till it stops pinging when its hot and under load, back it off another degree for safety and your done.

Thanks Blknight , I'll give that a go , but would still like to acquire the timing pointer.

Is it possible that you have an early engine with flywheel timing marks?

I have found the pointer to be completely useless on my S3. (using a strobe anyway)
I just make sure everything else is set correctly and then turn the dissy until it runs nicely. (and doesn't ping)

Try Land Vehicle Spares. They might have a pointer.
I think two bolts hold it onto the block.
You should buy the bolts too, as they might be UNF.
Does your crank shaft pulley have a mark on it?
When I fitted a military style fan, which has more blades and is a separate part to the water pump pulley, the crank shaft pulley had no make; so I made one after checking number one piston was at TDC.
