View Full Version : Fuse socket corrosion

Defender wouldn't start this morning. After a quick check, I noticed the applicable fuse and socket seemed to have a build-up of grey oxidation. No other fuses or sockets had this. The fuse wasn't blown. After pulling it out and putting it back in a couple of times, the vehicle started.
Any idea what might caused this, and what is the best solution?

If you are using ceramic fuses then you probably have fitted the cheap ones with aluminium fuse wire. Throw them out and get some Narva ones from the auto shop. Order if necessary. They run copper fuse wire and don't attract moisture and corrode like a dirty battery terminal. Moisture + dissimilar metals + current = corrosion.

Cermic fuses ? I;ve never seen a ceramic fuse in a Defender.

My fault, can't picture a defender fuse box, I don't see many. Bi-metal corrision will still occur with glass or blade style fuses. Again Narva fuses give me less grief than cheapies. Narva have special end soldered glass fuses that work where holders don't have end load to hold stupid glued ones together.

Seems the fuse wasn't really the problem. Wouldn't start again this afternoon, after a little bit of mucking around, a tap on the starter motor with a hammer did the trick.

Try some electrolitic grease to stop any corrosion. An electric contact cleaner is a good prep first. I think CRC make one, but there are plenty around.
( I may not have the spelling correct on that one )
