Hi all
Just wondering what your thoughts are on the 2000 Td5 defender. I am looking at purchasing one. Any particular flawes that should be looking out for? ( and dont say it hasnt got a TDI in it.)Or is the next year exterme model a better unit? I have been looking for a good TDI wagon to no avail. Thanks

I have a 2002 def extreme but when i did a search on here some of the things that effect earlier than 01/02 td5 defenders are:
Oil in ecu from the wiring loom
Ecu not flashable(after 01 or 02 model was) but needs a chip for powerup
check exhaust manifold as can warp(all td5's can suffer this)
if hard driven off road ,check front cv joints (these will eventually need replacing in all def's from tdi to puma)

good points:
salisbury rear diff- stronger than rover rear fitted to all defenders from 03 and all Def 90's . Get a detroit from the U.S(about 1/2 the aussie cost!) and some rear Hytuff driveshafts to ensure extra strength.

Not sure if it has traction control the extreme in 02 does???

I have had my 2000 110 wagon for about a year now and love it. The best purchase I ever made. Would love to know how much they are asking for it.

The only problems I have had is the starter motor is occasionaly playing up and I recently replaced the master cylinder.

I'm guessing you mean clutch M/C ?

If so, that's a problem with Tdi's through TD5's.

Fix is to replace with a PBR or similar 3/4" bore M/C as fitted to trailers, caravans, etc, the Girling seal kits just don't seem to last and you can pick up a PBR for less than the cost of a seal kit.

All Td5's suffer from the oil in harness issue, the later ones maybe not as quickly. My 2006 with 125000k's is now showing signs of this.

Rockyroad I hear that you stole your 2000 defender ....how many ks did it have on it when you brought it and did you look at any TDIs as I see a 98'tdi for the same price as the 2000 td5 im looking at.

I'm on my fourth replacement. Specialist says he can't see the problem has checked alignment etc etc.

I was extremely lucky. I saw mine in the shopping centre car park with a sign in the back window and wrote down the phone number.

The owner was a fellow Landrover nut who bought it with good intentions of going bush but never did. It was being used as the wife's shopping trolley and she finally put the foot down for something smaller.

It was well looked over and looked brand new without a scratch on it. It had a milford cargo barrier, snorked, ARB bar and a uhf but was otherwise stock standard. He was asking $16 500 and thats what I gave him. Didnt bother haggling as I knew he could get a lot more if he tried.

What worked in my favour was that the sign in the window was all he did. He did no other advertising and when handing over the keys conceded that had he did he could have gotten a lot more.

Lucky for me I was the first one to see it and ring him. He could have easily put another $10 000 on it and gotten it. I know I will never get another in such good condition and for such a bargain, especially around here.

The clutch had a fluid leak which found its way to leaking onto the clutch pedal and making things a bit slippery. Had my cousen do the job and it was definitely a PBR replacement.

It had just hit 150 000 kms which I though fantastic for a 9yr old car. In all honesty I wasnt even looking. I was happy with my 97 Disco but always wanted a Defender. It was just a case of right place, right time and right car.

I went straight home to ring the bank to see if I could make it happen then made the call.

Look around and be patient, but sometimes it comes down to luck.

Good timing =Great buying well done Rocky. The one that I have seen has only done 120 but is over $21,000 and does not have any logs service history. Said that they had been lost in moving state. I believe him but its so much more reasuring if you can see the history. I hear that the 2000 td5 have plastic dowels in the head and if its been cooked could be a problem. Interested in any veiws on this.

Cant wait to hear what you end up with. One of my brothers loves my Defender and wants one but has realised his chances of getting one like mine at that price are slim to nil.

I just hope he doesnt get a troopie like he has threatened to do.

Hi mate, I know, I'm late for my post, but It's just to let u know something I discovered recently about td5 2000 which I think it's important.

Firstly it's better to tell I had a defender td5 90 pickup 2001, which I sold in 2010 with 135k, and other than a ferw minor problems, it was a swiss clock; muster cylinder and slave cylinder for the clutch is a must with def, and roughly it happens every 60k.
After I moved to Oz I bought a 110 td5 2000 (I forgot that 5 years before a buddy which races with a def told me to avoid the td5 2000), and after 1 month I had to replace the bearing of the compressor of the turbine (nothing scaring), and now, after run a pressure test, head gasket to be replaced, and I discovered (after reading hundreds of posts about the problem) that the early td5s soffer that problem at 100k cause plastic dowels of the head.
I don't know if u already experienced, I hope it will never happen to u, but in case, u'll find lots of posts about it, and 2 of them with a detailed procedure to replace it with photos.
Sorry to worry u, but I thought better u to know.
Cheers
David

Hello. I have a 99 130 Td5, it to has oil in the harness, injector harness replaced and monitering the ECU plug! I have also had to do the head gasket (our little 4x4 dealer friend in Nth Brisbane drilled a 2mm hole in the back of the header tank to disguise the failing gasket). It had the plastic dowels... Now has steel and a head skim. 20000km later and all still ok. Rear axle shafts and caps were excessivly worn. Now replaced (don't buy the cheap ones). Other than that I love it! All the usual quirks associated with Fender ownership. Don't be phased by Td5's. There's that much info on this site with people you will be fine!:)
