Having fun on the Team W4 Challenge near Perth on the weekend. The 86" on half worn AT tires acquitted itself very well against some much bigger competition, its weight, narrow width with no upper body and low gearing being its biggest assets. I got caught out here being in the wrong gear in a very deep hole and thinking about the rock ledge just behind the photographer:):):).
Any event that you can drive the car onto the trailer at the end of it is a good event :):):).

You can see the punch hanging from the tree branch behind the 86" and I tried to get up on the bank on the right of the photo, but the side slope got me and I got hung up on a log:(:(:(:(. Was time for a winch out rather than risk damaging a cross member underneath.
Unfortunately I don't have any photos of it doing the good stuff as I was too busy driving!!!

Brakes are shot but that's to be expected. Driving with no brakes at low speed is one of life's grand adventures.

I just went back over this thread and certainly the demise of the free Photobucket service has had a major impact. Here are my two 57 series 1s - both 56 builds.
The first is a complete basic 88 with lots of patina - has the usual issues brakes etc but did run when parked up.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/09/684.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/YDUWRm)Pickup 004 (2) (https://flic.kr/p/YDUWRm) by Garry Collins (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150171671@N02/), on Flickr
The second is my genuine 88 Station Wagon - did run when parked but requires full restoration.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/09/685.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/YDUPDA)P9210026 (https://flic.kr/p/YDUPDA) by Garry Collins (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150171671@N02/), on Flickr
Now 86/88 station wagons are pretty rare - I know of only two others in Australia - mine, an 88 in Hornsby NSW and the Malcolm Douglas vehicle in the west. If you know of any others, particularly the 88 please let me know and ideally post up some pics.
Cheers
Garry

I wish I had a big shed but only manage over time to afford a few smaller ones. The seats I made for comfort not originality.
As John said, the front capstan works with a simple dog clutch from the front of the crank pulley.
Many years ago I sold a series one fire truck. Was it to you? I cant remember.[bigsad]

Just thought I would share a couple of photos of my little 1950 I picked up mid 2017
No. 06102238 (tel:06102238)
Found her here in SA, but the story goes that she was the young guys Grandpas off of his family property just over in North Western Vic... the guy was using it as a shooting rig that he would go out on weekend camping trips with his mates with.
So she runs, drives, and the lights work! I have been just slowly trying to find parts to complete her eg steerig wheel, doors and D lights
Plans are a quick freshen up and keep the patina then drive her [smilebigeye]

I was told it was running about 6 months ago, if true. I have used the crank, there is still compression. Haven't had time to play with it yet, with Corowa coming up. After I get back from that I will start to get into it. I will post some photos of the engine over the weekend. Still has original radiator, air filter and oil breathers. Fire wall is shot, fair bit of rust on the chassis, panels are very straight. Can't believe I got it, and yes, what a price! Cheers mate.

Making a bit of use of my '53 of late. Gathering rocks to place around some fruit trees to stop the chooks scratching at the the roots, etc. Consider it as a motorised wheelbarrow. Anyway, while I had the camera out, I took the old girl up to this spot overlooking the Yarra Valley for a little photoshoot. Apologies to some of the pic's in James Taylor's book on restoring S1's. Note the absence of the standard grille and what I think is one of the listed Chaff Guards in the '52-'53 parts catalogue. It was fitted to the car when I bought it from a farmer in Trentham in 1978.

It looks to be reasonably complete, and remarkably straight for an unrestored 80"!

It’s not to bad so far, seats are as expected stuffed but frames are there, probably just get exmoor.
two questions for those with a lot more knowledge than me
1:do 86in door tops fit an 80
2:also how do I find it’s history, bloke I bought it off near Dubbo was given it for payment for a job 30+ years ago.

just bought a pretty rough S1 project, not sure exactly how I feel about it yet because I still have an incomplete IIA project.... but the price was right.
Haven't seen it in the flesh yet and I don't know much about S1s at all, nor did the seller. Anyone ID what year this is?
Got the dreaded holden 149 conversion which I'll be getting rid of. Thinking about a S3 driveline maybe? Is this heresy?

Plan for right now is go pick it up then it will have to go into storage for a little bit as I don't have any room for it right now.
Cheers,
Adam

I must have missed these questions - sorry!
1. No. Even 80" door tops varied.
2. With great difficulty! Sounds likely your seller got it from the family of the original owner, seeing it was rural, who was probably deceased, but after thirty years even this link is likely to be broken. Someone on here has some of the NSW records, and the British Motor Heritage centre in the UK has most dispatch records from this period - but all this is likely to do is to confirm whether it was sent to Australia.

My 80" has a Series 3 2.25 litre diesel & gearbox in it. Maybe not original, but still Land Rover powered.:burnrubber:

Point one, yes, I've got some 80in ones that are Just about right shape, but not quite,[happycry]
Point 2 if anyone has any nsw records it would be good to fill in a few gaps, thanks.

Okay so I just drove 3,000km to pick up this pretty rough 1954 S1. She's all there minus an original engine, but nary a straight panel on the whole vehicle... Not to worry, the chassis and running gear all looks to be pretty good (minus butchered front crossmember) and the bulkhead seems pretty solid minus a small hole in one leg. She'll go into storage for a bit while I sort out somewhere to live and finish the SIIA.
Amarok towed it like a dream, added about 5l/km to the average which was surprisingly low. Will add some more photos before it goes to the storage.

This is my new 1955 86 inch. His name is Wilbur. He's complete, running, driving and stopping, rust free as far as I can tell, and cosmetically very tidy. He's been given quite a bit of love at some time, but appears to have suffered from neglect more recently. So I have a bit to do to get him all properly sorted. But rego shouldn't be too much of a drama, and once he's on the road I'll just put him to regular use and work through all these things as time permits. I'm a long term Defender but first time series 1 owner, so there's plenty to learn.
I was unable to get any kind of history on this car, only that it came from Victoria. So if anyone thinks they know it and can offer any info I would be grateful.

Hi all
A few years ago my sons and I did a full restoration on a Series 2. We took it to Cooma and can report that it is now (2022) almost finished.
Bitten by the bug, we have bought another - a 1950 series 1. Photo attached. We are still working on a name, but plan to keep the patina. It hasn't run for 5 to 20 years. All in all, we are just debarking on this project and still scoping out what needs to be done.
Cheers

I fear my landy collection is growing again. Just bought this 109 tray back. Heading off Friday to pick it up. Had a back-to-bare-chassis resto done a few years ago, running a series IIA engine and gearbox. Owner opted to go with the original panels which gives it an interesting look. Needs a little tidy up but is currently registered. Will make a separate thread about it and the ongoing work.

Fixed up (not restored) and with a canvas back, I reckon that would be the most useful Land Rover you'll ever own.

1958 107
I've recently acquired this. I've started a sympathetic type restoration of this 107. While the engine runs quite nicely, there is a hole in the block next to the rearmost leg of the exhaust manifold. it goes through into the water jacket. What are the options for sealing up something like that?

The Aluminium threaded plugs are available , they have a conduit thread. All three S1's i have owned had a pipe thread tapped & pipe plugs fitted. If you go this way you will need to make sure you grind the plug flush or you will brake the rear lug off the manifold . 179919 179920 179921

If it is 1958, and not a wagon, it is 109. Mind you, there is a great deal of uncertainty about the actual date of any Series Landrover these days, especially Series 1.

Yep, my mistake, it's a 109. From CALvin;
1 Type: Land Rover
23 Model: Land Rover, Series I
Body type: Basic
Wheel base: 109in (Long Wheel Base, LWB)
Engine: Petrol
Destination: Right-hand drive (RHD), completely knocked down (CKD)
8 Model year: 1958
00154 Serial number
Having got that small matter cleared up, I'm still curious about that hole. Is it a 'factory' hole that should have a thread in it or is it a casting fault that can be stopped up with a threaded bung. If the latter, where do I get the bung? The hole is about ø5mm.

179959 As you can see they were put in by LR , you will see them here at front & back of exhaust ports . I would say the centre of the Aluminium screw in plug has corroded , the plug is approx 1/2" dia , that hole looks like around 1/4 to 5/16 dia . As I have already said in my 1st reply the plugs are available but you will need to get the old plug out & hope the thread in the engine will clean up , all 3 S1's I have owned had the hole tapped to take pipe plugs before I owned them . As I said previously what ever you do the plug needs to be flush with the machined face or you will brake the manifold. The Series One Shop AU lists them around $30 each & you will need two. Plug can be seen here No 6 , one front & back 179960

Thanks a lot for that extra explanation 1950landy. I've had a Defender for a while, but these older Rovers are something new to me and there's a great deal for me to learn. There is a bigger hole at the other end of the exhaust port line. I thought perhaps it should have had a welch plug in it. When it arrived there was a plug of wood in that one!

Didnt know where to throw this up,a friends S1,1958,and one of my Brothers with his S3,1972,Bramwell Station,Cape York.
Pic taken mid '80's.
Hard to see,but on the roof of the S1,Jim always carried made up ladders to get up out of the creeks, through the mud and mulch.

After an extended drama getting the engine rebuilt, I finally got to take Larry for a drive today, fourteen months after the start of something I was originally told would only take a few weeks.:Thump::wallbash:
At least the engine now runs without smoke going everywhere, & so far, not leaking any oil (& yes I did check there is oil inside).:p
