Well I bought a Series 1 off evilbay a month or two ago and have had it sitting in the yard. Planning to do a full restore job on this one and bring it up as original as I can. I had thought that it was a 57 88" but hada look at some that are definitely 88" at the All British Day last weekend and thought, no, it looks like it might be an 86" judging from the position of the bolt on the front guard. So I got underneath today and found and cleaned up the chassis number and ran it through CalVIN and this is what I found -

5 Model year: 1955
7 Model: Land Rover, Series I, petrol
6 Body type: 86in, completely knocked down (CKD)
6 Destination: Right-hand drive (RHD), export market
1242 Serial number

So there you go it is earlier than I originally thought and is definitely an 86". It has surprisingly straight panels, has virtually no rust (just a little in the bulkhead under the drivers side vent) and the engine runs so it is a good starting point for a restoration.

Here are a couple of pictures of it.

So I am now off to change my signature again :).

Yep - definitely has 86 front guards but the radiator/light front panel is from a 88.

Everyone tried to tell me mine was an 88 and not an 86 when I got it, due to the body (it's a 1957 on a 1955 chassis) - just put a tape measure between the rear and front centre hub and read off the magic number.

It's an '86. In fact, I had to go downstairs and make sure my Len was still there:D

Well done Mr Tim. I'm more interested to see what was in the other 3 or so trailer loads:cool:

Hi Garry,

That is one of the reasons I originally thought it was an 88. Reading James Strong's book the 86 should have the radiator support with the three holes across the bottom. I don't believe this one has been modified, everything seems too original in the whole thing and also in his book there is a photo of an 86 that appears to have the same grille as this one and is stated to be original. So perhaps there was some leeway on those panels as with many others.

Hi CC,

I have already used some of the parts to get the 80" back on the road :). Front hubs and brake backing plates are great on the rear when you convert to full floating.

I still have to go back and pick up another trailer full. A couple of engine blocks and various odd parts. Just trying to work out when the trip can fit in.
