hi everyone. ive recently done a trip to the cape in my rangie and knowing we were going to do several deep water crossings i took what i had thought all preventative measures to ensure i wouldnt stall in them. i sealed my distributor,i bought the proper rubber sealing caps for both my distributor and my coil,sprayed everything with a product called electra seal it is specifically for sealing electrical components and also tarped up and of course a snorkel. but even after all that it still stalled in a few of the crossings. eventually i will be putting a diesel in her which will sort the problem. just wondering if anyone has successfully waterproofed their petrol as ive heard it can be done. cheers

yep, once upon a many moons ago I had the dizzy and leads set off of a 2a FFR, basically RF shielding with wire braid over the leads that screwed into the head and over the cap, I replaced the braid with rubber hose and had no problems fording.

it can be done but its not easy.

With a 4cyl you can use a rubber glove on the dizzy.

But on your case, your only option is a 4BD1-T. :D

I know Discowhite used to put a sheild around his dizzy on his old D1 V8 and i dont recall it ever stalling or farting and missing like the other V8's on a trip around lake Lyall. If you have done all those measures then fitting a sheild just to stop that excess water splashing onto the dizzy seems to mininise it further.

the mud lark boys in the NT use a 12V air compressor mounted inthe engine bay and run copmressed air to everything that they dont want water to get into - diffs, dizzy, coil mounted in a plastic electrical box and air into it as well.

it's a bit of buggerising around but works extremely well.

When I have the time I am going to do exactly that to mine, not that I have any intentions of ever playing in the mud again more a case of prevention is better than getting a toyota to pull me out.

I have tried the compressed air in the dizzy etc etc trick and it wasnt 100% water proof:(. I ended up pulling the dizzy all together and fitting megajolt ignition instead. Now it dosent cough or fart at the sight of water and with a few other water proofing mods to other components its as water proof as a diesel.

another vote for the megajolt setup, although more specifically i have a megasquirt, very similar ignition setup though and water doesnt phase it at all, which is helpful when stuck in a hole with the engine fan throwing water all over the coil packs and you need to use the winch to get out, if i had the distributor setup, it would have stalled almost instantly, it used to splutter going through a puddle on the road haha

I’ve had great success on my stage one V8 by making a small rubber grommet for where the vacuum advance rod go’s in on the distributor , sealing the plug lead boots with zip-ties, spraying the dizzy and coil plugs and engine with “INOX” . Wd40/ CRC won’t do, INOX leaves a lasting, water proof slime and works great on winch ropes and guns or anything else you don’t want to go rusty. Above all, I find keeping an engine/ ignition spotlessly clean is a great help, clean water only helps conductivity on a dirty surface. I’ve found if you apply INOX after you pressure wash your engine, it will stop stuff sticking to it, so next times even better. Hmm, sounds like an ad for INOX, but what the hell, I love the stuff!! Momar have a product called miracle spray.

Stupid name, I know. But it's pretty impressive stuff. You can spray it onto electrical plugs (240 v) and drop them into a bucket of water. No shorting, sparking or tripping of any safety switches. And the electrical devices keep on running happily.

Was about $40 per can though.

A couple of original zenith Carburettors, very simple electrical system on my vehicle, is yours injected? I haven’t worried about a snorkel yet, if water is over the bonnet, (for any length of time) you’ve got bigger problems, like floating away!

so from what I can see this does away with the dizzy completely and turns it into a coil pack?

Umm mine is a 4.6 converted to a dizzy to work with the CUX14 ecu does anyone know if it would be easier to go this way or convert back to the RR P38 coil set up? (not trying to steal the thread)
