Hi all

Both SWAMBO & I have noticed a new noise when driving around yesterday - a soft but distinct 'clunk' when driving off.

When we got home SWAMBO walked along the car while I tried to replicate it. It occurs almost every time I drive off from standstill in 1st gear, and SWAMBO says it sounds like it's coming from 'under the seats' - which probably means the transfer case.

What could it be? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/09/350.jpg

Have you checked the propshaft nuts, (most likely rear), are tight?

radius arm bushes.. ? check them with a screw driver..

It could be Drive flanges and/or steering ball joint.

I had it I think it was the rear diff....its easy to replicate when you pull away in first do so on just the clutch and then put it in reverse and again pull away just on the clutch..

Another member on here also has it, he was told it was normal but it is not...I finally had mine fixed not that long ago.

Just for the record I had bushes checked
A frame ball joint changed...

That was not the solution

Yep, when I tried to replicate, that's how I did it.

How was it fixed: replacement of the rear diff or actual fix?

As far as I was aware it was the rear diff.....yes my diff was replaced but I had whining issues too

My Puma has just stopped clicking moving off :D At first, the noise was coming from the rear - then from the front somewhere. It wasn't the diff - it was the 2 reasons I've mentioned above - clicking noises can be caused by many things - and whilst it may be, don't assume your diff is the cause. ;)

I'll look forward to hearing what the problem is with this then. I'm not assuming anything, but this issue..... I had the exact same symptom

its easy to replicate when you pull away in first do so on just the clutch and then put it in reverse and again pull away just on the clutch..

So, if it's not the diff, it's very likely the drive flange. LR will loctite the teeth to fix this.

Naks please don't feel you have to peruse my avenue just because I have said so I put this up because I thought it would help..didn't come on here for a my click is better then your clunk.

I think we are all just trying to help the fellow here, dullbird - and we will naturally all use our own experiences with these vehicles to that end. ;)

Relax - another post - another idea to investigate. :D

understandable scallops.
Please to save confusion best not to quote my experience then and tell me its something different. maybe just go back through your own old posts an quote your experiences ;)

That way Naks gets help from everyone and I dont get the ****s about things you say much like in the good old days when your car was fine and mine was not:)

OK dullbird - Sorry to annoy you so. It's unfortunate that my posts have, both now and in the past, had that effect - since they were only contributed in an attempt to help. This was news to me. I certainly don't come to this place looking for conflict. I do however think your reaction is unwarranted. Still - point taken. Good luck with your vehicle.

Guys, many thanks for all the suggestions.

I have not been able to replicate the clunk this morning, will try now on the way home. Have booked it with my indie specialist and will print out this thread for him :)

Just saw your thread on this on Defender2 - some good advice there! ;) Let us know how you get along. :)

I have what I think may be the same clunk that has just recently started occurring. Yes - it seems to happen when moving off but I have also noticed it at other times when slowing or picking up speed. I thought it might have been somethign loose in the rear door as that was just recently adjusted, but your desciption of it sounding like it is somewhere under the rear seats of your 90 (meaning it would be under the cargo area in my 110) is also accurate.

My vehicle is about to go back to the dealer for some follow-up warranty repairs (they damaged the internal roof lining whilst replacing the windscreen - which didn't actually need replacing so go figure ). I'll post the outcome here if they find the cause. I now suspect it's either the rear diff or prop shaft.

Hi all, My experiece is it could be in the park brake assembly. When the shaft turns sometimes the drum and pads contact and move . Had it fixed on a 1985 and 2008 defender. all good now.

Hey Pete

had a lot of dramas with my park brake too...that was a culprit for a few things on my car also.
