G'day all i am now the proud owner of a 1998 def 110, ute with 160,000km, and she's a ripper. After selling the hilux (a car with a front diff) i now own a truck.
anyway i have had her a week and occainsly when i take off in first gear she makes a real thud from gearbox, if i really really slowly slip the clutch she doesn't do it. WHat i am wondering is...
"is it me or the car?!?!?!?!"
i am hoping it is me and my tehcnique having never driven such a truck like vehicle
cheers

Very technical question here - is it a "thud" or a "clunk"?
Could be the handbrake shoes sticking? ("thud")
Some backlash in the drivetrain is normal through general wear ("clunk" as it is taken up) but excessive backlash could be a problem that is better fixed now than when something finally breaks out in the bush. I'd suggest park the vehicle, chock the wheels, take off the handbrake, crawl under and try and rotate the propshafts by hand to see if there is much play. If less than 1/4 turn then unless it bothers you I'd be inclined to live with it and practice being gentle when driving off.

Check your gearbox mounts, my county did this it turned out to be a torn gearbox mount.

there is less than a 1/4 of a turn in both driveshafts, it bothers me a little so i will send it off to a landrover man, shortly,
thanks again
