View Full Version : Do I have the original 2L in my 1955 SWB?

I have been setting the timing on my little Series I and have come across a small question.

The manual says I should locate the "F.A. 10 degree" mark on the flywheel. So I took off the inspection plate on the drivers side to view the flywheel. There is a pointer fixed to the casing, and upon rotating the flywheel around 360 degrees all I can find is a mark labeled either EP or FP, it's a bit hard to tell. Is this the mark I am looking for?

This made me think that perhaps it is not the original 2L motor, but maybe a 2.25L.

The engine number is 57104213 if anyone knows how to decode that. Chassis number is 57660495, so from my readings that makes it a 1955 model.

Any thoughts?

Tks
David

Yep. by the eng No and the pic that should be a 1955 2l motor
Some flywheels have FA and some have TDC The EP is for the valve timing
48/53 Had TDC & FA 8* 15*
54 / 58 Had TDC 3* 10* Some have FA &TDC Some have only TDC. I recall.... But eye stand to be corrected.........

OK - so I am an idiot or something.

I just went around the flywheel again, and magically the 10 degree mark is there this time

Still interested to know if it is a 2L or a 2.25 though.....

Am off to set the timing now, seeing as I've found the proper mark.

That ain't no 21/4 litre.

The vehicle is a 1955 86inch wheelbase Right Hand Drive Export Completely Knocked Down (Assembled in Australia).

The engine number is correct for the model and after reviewing vehicles assembled in NSW could easily be the engine fitted to your vehicle at the assembly plant (not-NSW).

We just crossed posts - thanks for the 2L confirmation. I was hoping it was the proper engine.

Yes thats the right engine.
The EP is exhaust valve peak and is 31 flywheel teeth before TDC or top dead centre.
The timing mark should be FA and is 15 deg before TDC. Or count 4 flywheel teeth before TDC.
So if you have your EP mark you can find the others.

Well I swear that mark was not there when I first did it

I was turning it with the crank handle, so perhaps not fine enough control. Might have been easier the first time with two persons too.
