View Full Version : Does heater use fresh air?

When I use the heater in the fender I can smell the exhaust fumes from the car in front when I am stationary. No fumes when using aircon.
Does the heater only use fresh air drawn from the left wing top or is there a way of using re-circ? Or do I have some associated seal or filter issue?
Thanks

It's because it only uses fresh air. there is no recirc. except for that from the aircon, which is a completely separate system. If you don't like the smell, then shut off the air control untill you get moving again. Don.

I am not familiar with the TD5 heater, but I think it's the same as the Tdi (someone may tell otherwise though).

With the fan lever on the left of the dash in the top postion a flap closes off the heater box where it is against the firewall, meaning you should have no air flow. As you move the lever downwards the flap opens allowing in fresh air from the left guard vent. When the lever reaches the first "click", the fan starts. There is no way of having the fan on recirculating cabin air. So, assuming the cable hasn't slipped in the clamp on the heater box, you shouldn't be getting any exhaust fumes with the fan lever in the full up/off position, but it is possible for the fumes to enter with the lever in any other postion.

The Tdi air conditioning recirculates cabin air.

My TD5 130 has the cleverly designed Landrover free flow air system. By not fitting the doors too tightly in the frames, and using very limited seals, a flow of fresh air is assured even if there are problems with the dedicated heating and cooling system. This however may let in unwanted outside influences like dust and exhaust fumes.

An additional advantage of this approach is that it stops the interior from getting too hot when you use the heater or too cold when you use the air conditioner. :D Snapper
