If anyone is running a pre-filter on their snorkle, I would be very interested in hearing how they go, some questions;

1. Do they work well with the TD5 turbo

2.Do they actually collect the dust effectively.

3.Would a good policy be to have one in the spares box, and swap with the snorkle head in very dusty conditions
Ilook forward to your replies,

Cheers, Bob10:beer::banana:

Gday Bob10
When we did our Gunbarrel and Canning stock route trip Disco WA (roger) ran 1 on his TD5 auto, and after seeing how that went I will defintely invest in 1 for my future trips especially if going on dusty roads..
As far as performance went , his auto ate the dunes and tracks on that trip so from where I was, it didn't affect it at all.

Send him a PM, he's a top bloke and sure he will give you any info you need..:BigThumb:

Cheers Ean

1. Do they work well with the TD5 turbo, yes, mine is a TD5 auto and as Ean said I used it on the gun barrel & CSR with no loss of power. the only down side is induction noise is louder at higher revs but not too intrusive if the passenger window is up

2.Do they actually collect the dust effectively. yes, & they are easy to clean out & work well in the rain

3.Would a good policy be to have one in the spares box, and swap with the snorkle head in very dusty conditions, I carried the standard safari intake for the whole trip & did not find a reason to swap them over

I look forward to your replies,

Only 1 quick query.....did you run a Donaldson pre cleaner? I've seen and heard good things about them so would be interested in what you installed.

Thanks for your assistance

I have seen the donaldson precleaner (round appr 6-8" diam with clear plastic bowl) used on a 200 Tdi and it worked fine. Catches lots of dust which would otherwise end up in the filter element or the filter box/container. I have a 300 Tdi with a Safari snorkle and the diameters donot match so you need a rubber hose/tube with a bit of stretch to get a good coupling.

Robert Pepper did an article, I think it was for the LROCV mag if I find it I might scan it, don't hold your breath as it will go on the to do list.

OK - I know the thread does say Donaldson pre-filter but I just wanted to confirm it was an actual pre-cleaner and not 1 of the snorkel 'socks' that are used :angel:

I've used one a number of times on different trips when I think it will be 'dusty'.
It has worked fine and collected plenty of dust, and as has been said a bit noisier and for the 300/Safari snorkel you do need an 'adapter' to marry up the different diameters.

I had one for my 200TDI and it worked well.

I've got one for the TD5 Def 2001 and as stated you need a rubber filler piece to get the size right.

ARB Artarmon Sydney NSW sells a small section of silicon hose for, I think $10, that works perfectly.

I used a 7inch Donaldson pre cleaner with a 3 inch inlet it fits straight onto the top of the Safari snorkel no adaptor required.

we used them inthe top end abck in the 80's when most of the roads off of the main highways were dirt.

very effective easy to use and clean, but they are noisy - mind you it was also before most work 4wd's had airconditioners so it was with the windows down

I used a Donaldson pre cleaner on my Safari snorkel on our Canning trip, it fitted the snorkel perfectly & worked well.

Donaldson have a newer version called 'Top Spin' that automatically ejects the dust so you don't have to clean the bowl each day.

Bear in mind that they are technically made for low speed equipment, IIRC Donaldsom didn't recommend them for highway use (and yes i know, everyone has used them on highway equipment since Pedro was a boy :D )

<edit> :lol2: should have downloaded Pedro's file first, his is a much newer brochure too :D
