ceiling fan to be swapped with an energy saving dome light

Finally had enough of the ceiling fan in the bedroom ,the blades pick up any bit of dust and dirt floating around and get pretty filthy after a while and need constant cleaing.

where the fan's base screwed into the timber work ,the old ceiling plaster board had a big chunk missing out of it , some of it had gone soft for whatever reason :confused: and needed repaire.

A trip down to bunnings w/house and a m2 piece of 10mm plaster board fixed this problem.:twisted:

Had to cut out a bit of the existing board to get rid of the softended plaster board before screwing the new square gyprock piece in.


once it was all fixed in place , I mixed some plaster cement and filled the gaps in , it hasn't fully cured yet , so I'll sand it tomorrow and then install the light in place. :)

we installed the ceiling fan in the bedroom as 2nd option to split air , I never really liked them , Leigh wanted it installed so we did. I'd rather have saved up and put in a Fujitsu split system.

cutting the plaster board yesterday was a bit of a pain , the fine fibres in the plaster board made my arms really itchy ,periodicaly had to stop and take a break, being a really old house i'd say there is plenty of asbestos.

A square piece of gyprock cut out and screwed into the timber work , and some plaster cement and Jobs nearly done ,

This was one of those really annoying jobs that I'd been postponing for a while, should sand back nicely and a coat of ceiling white and you couldn't tell it's there.

nice job I don't want to put a damper on your glory, but if you didn't use tape to joins the old fibreous plaster to the gyrock sheet, it will crack all around the joins as they are of different properties.

also you need to glue and nail/screw gyprock, the nails are only to hold the sheet in place, it's the glue that actually holds it to the battens.. otherwise the nail heads show though down the track with expansion and contraction of the materials.

If you ceiling gives you grief in the future here's a tip if you have older houses with high ceilings.
I had a very bad ceiling of fibourous plaster that would have been a messy job to remove. I ended up screwing 25mm timber battons to all the esisting ceiling joists straight through the existing plaster ( BUT MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY ELECTRICAL WIRES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE JOISTS -Like your pic)
Then attach the new gyrock sheets to the new battens.
Did mine 20yeasrs ago and still holding strong.
