View Full Version : Variable wiper intermittance for your Defer', cheap and simple.

I found this great tip on how to cheaply and simply swap out a relay and acheive variable wiper intermittance that you programme yourself.
I bought my relay second hand off ebay for $30. When it arrived it took longer to walk out to my puma than it did to put it in.
The new wiper functions are...
1) Instead of pushing the wiper stalk button and getting five swipes (too long) a single tap will now get one swipe from the wiper.
2) tap and hold the same button a fraction longer and get three swipes with the washer spray, intstead of the normal five swipes. Much better.
Here's the best bit...
3) Flick the stalk down to start the wiper and then flick it back to the off position. Wait the amount of time you would like the wiper interval to be, and then flick the stalk back down again. Your variable wiper is now programmed to that speed. To cancel just flick it off and start again.

It has been raining on and off here for the last few days and I am really happy with how much more convienient the wipers are to use. Best upgrade I didn't know I needed.

Second hand ones here (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/no-99-VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-POLO-WIPER-RELAY-357-955-531-/220640021113?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item335f2b8a79).

There are actually a couple of previous AULRO threads about this. Some quotes for new in Australia range from $108 to $180 odd.

Weird. I just tried the link with no problem.
I first called VW but they wanted about $160.
I then found one on UK ebay for $30.

Thanks. I've got a 300Tdi, so it will be interesting to know if it works on different models.

Don't know about Tdi but was going to try when I get one for the Puma. Bosch want more for the relay than VW do :o

I've been hunting on and off for over a year for a cheaper price on a new relay. The second hand ones can be off vehicles over 10 years old.

Got one from UK, and tried it in my Defender TD5 2004. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work correctly in mine, as it seems to in the Puma. There must be some difference in the wiper control.

It does the variable intermittent function OK, but if you want to give the screen a good wash and push the washer button for 5 seconds or so, then the wipers remain on continuously with the stalk in the OFF position.

The only way to stop it is to turn off the ignition, which is not very practical while driving!

Cheers,

Lionel

Have just discovered my relay was faulty! I have obtained another one which works perfectly, so they definitely work on a TD5 Defender. I obtained this locally for $25 + $10 postage.

This was after a search on Parts Locator - the no1 autoparts directory (http://www.partslocator.com.au/)

Getting a refund on original one.

Lionel, where is this relay located, is it under the seat, or against the firewall under the dash?
I'm at work and want to do it quickly and you will save me a couple of mins, just in case someone sees me wasting work time!!

It's behind the instrument cluster (behind the steering wheel). Just undo the 4 screws, ease out the instrument cluster, and it's the red 6 pin relay on the right, which needs to be removed to plug in the "99" one in its place. Each relay plug is on a plastic slide fitting, so that you can pull it out more easily. You will see what I mean.

Job done!:D
Thanks Lionel.

That would have to be the easiest, cheapest, and most value for money upgrade I've done to the Fender, the cruise control is my next favorite.
I can confirm, like Lionel, that it works in an '04 Td5, I'd be surprised if it didn't also work in a Tdi.
If a Tdi owner wants to pop in to my place, I'm happy to pop it out and try it in theirs......

Cheers all,

Fraser

So does it work on a tdi/county? The wiper setup for tdi/county is identical. Where is the wiper relay?

If it's the same, it's behind the speedo etc.

Got one of the VW .99 relays on ebay from UK.

Can confirm it works just as described in '97 Def TDi300. The relay is located behind the fuse block on the bulkhead just forward of the range selector, in this model
Thanks for the post

Ordered new relay from UK on the 22nd, part arrived today 29th, 7 days:D

Took all of 90 seconds to fit to the PUMA.

1/ Open fuse box cover.

2/ Locate bright red fuse and remove.

3/ Insert new VW.99 relay.

Install complete.....

All tested, works a treat.;)

My relay finally got off the slow boat from the UK.

Unlike the Pumas, where apparently walking to the car is harder than replacing the relay, the intermittent wiper relay in the 200Tdi is hidden. It's behind the fuse panel, second relay from the left. Wires are just visible below the centre fuse panel and the relay and plug can be pulled down to exchange the relay.

It all works as advertised.

Photos to follow when I have daylight.

Same location Ranga? I got the impression the relay would be visible. Pretty much tore the dash apart looking for it.

Clever bit of kit. But I wonder if its the sort of thing that Defender owners would appreciate more than most? After all, it is still a bit quirky and requires operator intervention to function.

Yep, except mine was the far left relay.
