View Full Version : Is 4.0 Petrol D3 a bad idea?

Had a 90 in UK and now living in VIc, reckon I need something a bit more refined given the longer travel distances here.

Have looked at a few 4.0 petrol D3's and they seem pretty good value. Am likely to go S to avoid air suspension porblems, but wanted a view on the 4.0.

Can you get a snorkel for it and am i likely to be able to make it okay for watercrossings in High Country? Have seen snorkel for TDV6 but not 4.0. Diesel seems a fair bit pricier?

Which air suspension problems do you mean? Once you've driven the SE with TR and air suspension you won't want a coiled S.

I've done 88,000k in my V6 and am very happy with it.

Guess I was worrying about the problems some people have with air system on an early D3. Felt a bit safer to go coil - also a lot cheaper.

Any thoughts on water proofing?

Had a V6 petrol on loan once while my TDV6 was being serviced. Didn't think it was too bad at all, quite pleasantly surprised! If you wanna go off road you must get air suspension.. Don't know about snorkel though.

Most (if not all) early EAS cars would have been upgraded under warranty, so that shouldn't be an issue. If you're serious about going off-road, get the air! Greater height for fording too .........

Plenty of info around about water-proofing. PM me if you want a copy of a little guide I wrote.

Cheers,

in short, yes, very much so a early one, even a new one i would not buy, v8 is worth the money but, cheaper then the desiel, better fuel comp in the v8 as well, much nicer drive, theres heaps on here about v6-v8-tdv6 witch to buy

I am also looking for information on D3s, some of the UK sites detail problems that are off putting, engines blowing, diff issues and bearings. I've had an outstanding run with my D1 (301 000Ks) but am wondering if there is a thread that details issues with each model from 2005 on to the current D4s. My D1 is an SE, good balance between equipment and price.

I have an 4.0L v6 SE (MY2009 - so hopefully they've ironed out all the faults !) - am thrilled to bits with it. Would highly recommend the SE over the S due to the equipment levels, in particular, the air suspension and terain response system etc.

Couldn't quite make the stretch for the TDV6 in the SE model, but figured that the extra cost of the diesel engine would not be outweighed by the extra cost of petrol consumption. I would have preferred the TDV6, but am still very satisfied with the V6 petrol - low down in the rev range is not nearly as good as the diesel, but once off the mark, very smooth. Fuel consumption isn't bad when considering one is moving 2.4 tonnes of not the most aerodynamic vehicle. For me, a good compromise.
