The first thing you need to do Rod is answer the question as to why you want wider tyres. I am not suggesting you don't need them, though that may be the case, but rather in some circumstances the tyres may be too wide and in others, not wide enough. Tied to issue of width, is diameter. Most people who get wider tyres also increase the diameter. There is no simple answer and no two answers are the same, but the first step is always to ask your self why.

Cos they sometimes look better and this goes with costing more to buy and replace, increasing rolling resistance & gearing and lowering fuel economy, wearing out just as fast as skinny tyres, probably making more road noise, maybe rubbing on the guards, blah, blah, blah - god, I've become a cynical old bastard. Don't go too wide Rod, they'll look a bit wanky and just as bad as my skinny cheese cutters, look for something that gives you the 5 o'clock shadow, macho look but does the job you want at the same time. :)

Hi Rod
I would spend abit of time and have a look through the "show us your deefers" thread.
There is lots of pictures and you will be able to work out what you want/need.
Its your truck mate and your the one that has to drive it so do what you want/need.

There is some good info on this forum about tyre size, width, height and rim offset.

Hi Rod,
I've got Mickey Thompson Baja Claws 285/75R16 on 16x8 steel rims with a 1" off set.
Very happy with the tyre for a good serious all rounder. We have done a lot of touring and serious off road stuff on these tyres. We also still have the original Gerneral grabbers still on the Boost alloy's which we run around town on. I think this is a great way of doing tyres. You don't wear your off road tyres out hooning around town. And they do stick out just a little too far so I think a cop might take offense if he saw you everyday with them on.

BUT! As Zeus very wisely said. "It is your car so do what you like" Enjoy it and smile :D I do :)

JohnR,
Did you need the 1" offset to get the width under the guards and not rub?
Why did you choose a 1" offset?
It looks like the tyres hang out past the flares just a touch, I like the black look.

To keep your steering lock, yes you need -25 rims.
I run -25 rims on 255 85's to gain a wider track.

Yeh, what Benny said. To keep steering lock and a slightly wider track. They do hang outside the guards and that's one of the reasons I don't use them as a everyday tyre.

I've got the same rubber as JohnR (sweet photos again too, mate! :TakeABow:) but got a slightly different offset which places the outside of my tyres just within the stock guards so they are street legal too - 'Cos I'm too lazy to change them over and they just look so bling!
Tyres - Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 285/75R16. Rims - Black Steel Dynamic, 16X 7 25mm negative offset.
I get exactly the same fuel consumption running these as I did with the original tyres, and the rate of wear I have is indicating up to about 90,000km from a set. I rotate every 10,000km.
I've found these tyres give a much more sure footed feel off road and of course, it's chalk and cheese if its wet and muddy.

What brand rear wheel carrier mate? I've been looking for 16x8 rims with the same offset as you guys, and was concerned about the tyres touching the tail lights :whistling:

Im running 285/75/16's in the new KM2 and there on neg 25 black round hole dynamic rims and there great they drive heaps better than the old 235/85/16 bfg at's and consumption is the same with the suzi .
Only prob i have is they hang out just that wee bit and i had to do some triming of the flares and the inner front edge of the inner guard as my springs are sagged and the nice officer pointed out yesterday whilst asking me to count to 10 into his hand held device them tyres look good tho you better get some wider flares yes sir i said the flat dogs are on the way from the UK :D

I run modded disco rims which have been moved out 20mm. Running 255/85 KM2 I get a clean full lock, full articulation without rubbing and the tyres are within the standard guards.
I you flip them, or go wider the tyres will stick out past the std flares and technically be illegal.

I have an idea of getting my standard wolf rims widened so it still looks stock, but has wider tyres. Probably go 16 x 7.
It's a bit rich however at $220 a rim, but it would be a bit different and look pretty trick. Just another idea to dream about.
Does anyone know the standard off set if any on a Defer, or it wouldn't matter, -25 is -25 regardless?
excuse my limited understanding.
thanks

33 x 12.5 x 15 KM2's on 15 x 8 -25mm offset rims.
Wider flares cover them though I think any wider tyre and they would start to hang out.
With this offset and adjusted steering stops I have a better turning circle than the stock wheels.

Hi Guys,
Confused over the neg/pos aspect of offset; if my hub face is nearer the outside of the rim, which do I have? I know it's not strictly correct but on an overall width of 8 inches, the hub is 5 inches from the inside edge. The bead is approx half an inch either side.
Ta!

It is an Opposite Lock Dolium number but it has been heavily modified with welded gussets because I managed to break it in the Kimberley and then again on the Gunbarrel.
OL now sell them with some of these gussets mine has as standard. They put a gusset on the lower cross member attachment - but mine has a much meatier one in this spot - it was my mod, I had it welded in Dalby WA. Then I had 4 extra gussets on the bit that attached to the rear door because this part failed too. So there are probably better ones to buy off the shelf - mine is indestructible now, but! :D But if you get one of these - the good thing is, if it fails, OL are pretty good about fixing them - even years down the track. ;)

The closer the hub face is to the outer edge of your rim the more positive your offset.
Offset doesn't change with rim width, back space does change with rim width.
neg offset puts the hub face of the rim more inward or closer to the truck putting the tyre/rim further away from the truck.
pos offset puts the hub face of the rim more outward or further away from the truck putting the tyre/rim closer to the truck
+ and - offset is the distance measured either side of the center of the rim. So a 20mm + offset means the hub face of the rim is 20mm further away from center towards the outer edge of the rim putting more of the rim under the guards. And a 20mm - offset means the hub face of the rim is 20mm closer towards the inner edge of the rim putting more of the rim outside of the guards.
I hope this helps?
There is a good picture some where but couldn't find it quickly.
Cheers Zeus

I run 255/85/16's on my Tdi with 8x16 rims that just stick out from the guards. They have caused an increase in fuel use but other than that they are better than 235's.I run them at lower pressure,32 compared to 40 for the skinnys and the ride difference is a huge improvement over the rougher roads around here.JohnR,your black deefer is a mean lookin' machine.
