View Full Version : Puma Traction Control in soft sand

Now, I've read a lot about how bad the TC is in soft sand. In the UK, the LR Experience trainers are telling people to remove the TC relay when driving dunes. But I haven't done this and I'm not even sure I could find which one it is?
Is it the ABS one? (I don't much like the idea of disabling part of the brake system). Has anybody done this? How does the vehicle drive after you've done it?
What about lockers front and rear....what happens to the factory TC once the diffs are physically locked? Does it need to be disabled to fit lockers?
I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this...

So long as you lock your CDL the traction control won't interfere much, if at all. I did alot of driving in soft powdery sand over here in my 08 110 and the TC was never an issue. As for front and rear diff locks, they will keep both wheels on the axle turning at the same speed so the TC won't need to do anything, so won't need to be deactivated.

I agree, I have an ARB air locker in my 110 and as yet have no use for it. On very soft powder around Exmouth last year I only lowered the tyre pressures to maintain traction on beaches I have never been able to reach before. I have been thinking of a switch TC system in the wifes TD5 90 for as it has no locker and I think the Puma TC is a lot better, but I dont know. Has anyone done this modification and what problems could this cause. I know ABS will switch off but this is not an issue driving up a dune.

It's actually got me out of trouble a couple of times in soft sand.
Tyre pressures are definitely more important.

i tern mine off for the fact that TC used the brakes, and brakes in sand kills pads, i had new rear pads fitted month or to ago, when up the north sure on the weekend and the rear iners pads were makes no diff metal to metal,
the main resin to turning tc off is when it is activated it cuts engine power, in sand thats no good,
TR in the other landrovers is a great demo of this working,

How have you set yours up to turn off/on. I was thinking of removing the fuse and fitting a cable with inline fuse and switch that I can operate when needed.

I have done a lot of sand driving in D2's,both with & without CDL,& never had any issues with TC.Sure,rear brake pads do tend to chew out,as they can also in very dusty conditions as well.
Lowering tyre pressures & keeping up momentum are the main issues as said,also travelling as lightly loaded as possibly also helps.
My son's Puma has had no issues with TC & on a recent Fraser trip,in fact it performed better than both other vehicles that were on the trip,one an 80 series petrol & another a GU patrol.

They have sand dunes in the UK!?
No need to disable TC in sand - take your tyres down to 1.0 bar, choose the correct gear and TC will rarely kick in.

most times just pull the fuse, no harm done, or just pump the peddle 10 times as soon as the ing is on, and that terns tc off but leaves abs on,

That only applies to the Td5, not the Puma.

I tried pumping the brake as sugested and when it reached 5kmph TC and ABS lights went out. Maybe I didn't pump it fast enough.
