Mystery Bracket

Can anyone identify what this bracket is for or where it goes on the motor of a 3.9 V8 '89 Range Rover? See attached photos.
Reassembled and installed motor after two years and this was left over. My best recollection is it was part of the aircon compressor mountings but can't for the life of me see any spare bolt holes on the compressor or its mount!!

Can't help with the bracket, but if that's all you have left, you've done better than I usually manage.:D Even if I have an engine out for only a week, I usually end up with a small pile of bolts left over - I just figure they must have been unnessasary to start with...:eek:.

I have got a bit better in recent years when stripping bikes - I put every braket with its nuts and bolts into seperate bags, and write on them what they are for - that and plenty of photos. I'll see how good this works soon, when I start to reassemble my 78 Z650 bike which has been apart for 18 months...:p

It is a brace which goes from a water pump bolt to the power steering bracket or around that area.
If I get time I will take a photo.

The bracket goes from the (about 3 inch long) timing cover bolt right next to the crankshaft pulley to support the front lower pivot bolt of the alternator. Earlier RRC's didn't have this bracket and the alternator bracket would break and sag under belt load. I have made my own bracket for a number of 84-88 series RRC's to counteract this. I think your model was the first to have a factory support here.

no no no that's the all important "holdy engine togethery" bracket.

Whatever you do DON'T drive it until you've stripped the entire engine to component parts and started all over again ;)

But what happens if when building a car from left over parts, you end up with left over parts? You won't know if they are missing, or left over or spares or the beginning of the next car to be built from parts. :D

That's why it has a small diameter bolt hole at one end and why the alternator is already making some protesting noises under new belt tension!
