View Full Version : Have you seen this County??

Hi all.
I am trying to track down a particular County which my family used to own. I know it's a long shot but I would love to track it down, find out it's history since it left us and hopefully make an offer to buy it back and fully restore it. Don't ask me why, it's just something I would love to do. We bought the car brand new in 1985 ( I was 5 years old!) and spent the next year travelling around Australia in it, so I grew up a year in the back seat bumping around the country, and suprisingly, considering my age, can remember a lot about the trip. Everytime I hear that 'doing' sound a county makes when you release the clutch pedal it takes me back.
Anyway, as I said I would love to find it and restore it as we have an extensive photo history of it's first ten years of life and I think it would be a great project to see it come full circle.
What I know about the car. It was a 1985 V8 County 5 speed, red in colour.
It's registration was CTI 060 (Victorian). I looked about 6 years ago and it was still registered under this plate, although I checked again recently and this number did not seem to be listed, so either the current owner has stopped paying the rego, or it has been re-registered.(or worst case, it has been wrecked:(:(:()
It was purchased at Ballarat from Gardon Motors and was fitted with an Opposite Lock bullbar (Dad still has the original bumper in the shed) and Cibie driving lights, which were still on it when it got traded. The only other items that might differentiate it from stock county's was it had a custom vinyl covered speaker panel above the rear door with two speakers in it facing forward, and it had a power plug mounted on the rear chassis member, above the towbar. It was an old 32 volt style female plug (looked like the end of an 240 volt extension lead but instead of three slots it had two in the shape of a T). It also had extractors fitted to the V8.
It was traded in 1995 (on a defender 130 which we have only just sold) in Hamilton Victoria, and was purchased by a Someone (dont know first name) Stewart who worked for the shire and lived in Penshurst. The dealer tells me this person has moved on and they have not seen the car for years.
He is also trying to find the VIN number in his old files, but no luck as yet.

I realise I am probably pushing it up hill, but someone might remember the rego from a friends car, or might even own it! Even if you have done something like this yourselves and have an idea of how I might go tracking it down I would love to hear from you.
Hopefully this thread continues through finding the car, and right through its restoration!
Anyways, you might think I'm strange, but i've set myself a challenge, so we'll see how it goes......

What a nice venture, good luck with it.
Wouldn't it be great to drive it around the big island again?

It was Gardon Motors. I think they are still there but are Peugot dealers now??

That's the ultimate goal, we actually still have the same camping trailer been parked in the shed for the last 25 years gathering dust. Dad keeps threatening to sell it but I manage to talk him out of it each time. She was a good setup as we carried enough gear to be away from civilisation for weeks at a time. A big ask with three kids!

I am trying to scan a few photos to upload them which might help the cause.

I just thought of something else that might distinguish it from others. It had a VDO tachometer mounted on top of the dash on the RHS of the steering wheel.
Not much but it all helps!

If you can get the chassis no. it's possible to track down if it's still registered and possibly last registered owner.
Does your Dad have any old rego papers / copies of roadworthies?

If you get the chassis no try doing a REV's check to see if that gives any more info.

I am in the process of tracking down the VIN as I know this would be a big step in researching the cars whereabouts. I know we have it somewhere but it is hidden amongst 40 years of farm records so it might take me a while.
In the meantime heres a few photos

1. Tower Hill 1985
2. A photo that was in an article about the trip in the paper when we returned 1986
3. Not sure where but shows the rego
4. The trailer 25 years later.

That's quite a quest! You're chances are probably not huge, but stranger things have happened :D

Good luck with the search.

just for interests sake, a picture of the 130 brand new that we traded the county in on , 1995.
And our two current landies, an 08 Discovery and a 96 defender farm hack we bought second hand this year.

Alright. I have finally found some old rego papers. But, unfortunately they are not much help. They list the VIN Number as 3995380..... Firstly, this isn't the VIN I know and secondly, its to many numbers to be the last 6 digits of the VIN. I have looked through 10 years of rego papers and insurance receipts and this is the only number they list. Even the old workshop receipts don't list the VIN on them.
Aside from giving up, I was wondering whether anyone with a 5 speed V8 85 model county would be able to tell me their VIN number, as I might try just adding the numbers I've got onto the build number and see what happens. According to my research it should be something like SALLDHME7BA????

Found another County the same spec as the one I am chasing, its VIN was SALLDHMV7BA****** So I can assume the VIN I am chasing is SALLDHMV7BA399538. I have typed this into the vicroads VIN checker and......... doesn't recognise it. Anyone got any ideas?

No guarantees it is still registered in VIC.

My 1987 3.9D 110 is SALLDHMZ7BFXXXXXX Note that the vin decoder says that means CKD. I am not sure if the V8s were also built here as CKD - which would change your VIN. It is possible that number is the engine number, but you would have to check with others on that.

has anyone got a 3.5 carby engine number I can compare with ? The vin i got was a vehicle exactly the same as what i am chasing so i gather all V8 county's sold in australia were built in Solihull, and the Isuzu's were a CKD, (which is interesting in itself!) Also, does anyone know of a way you can look up what Vin should be matched to which engine number??

Wet weather has allowed me to get back on to this, forgot about it for a while there! Just wondering if anyone out there has a engine number from a 3.5 v8 county to compare with a number that I have. I just am trying to work out whether the number I have is an engine number, or the end of the VIN number.

Thank's

My V8 County engine number is 355327887, if that helps. (My VIN is the same format as the one you listed previously but different last 6 digits so hopefully your engine number will follow the same format).

I'm in WA, my County did spend some time in Vic but doesn't match your description so can't be the one you are looking for.

Good luck in your hunt.

Hi
I have an 85 County 3.5l V8.
My engine number is 22G0212
VIN is SALLDHMV&BA241457

I hope it's the one you are looking for because I would love to sell it to someone who will pay for sentimental value because there is not much else!

Sadly it started life white so I dont think we have a match.

Good luck with the hunt.

If it's definitely a 1985 V8 5 speed, the vin number will be what you have tried. SALLDHMV7BA plus the serial numbers. Unless you can confirm those numbers it's going to be pretty hard to locate.

Have you tried getting in touch with the LROCV as I think there's still a bit if a register running of known County/Defender details within the club. Its possible the last registered owner was a member.

I have finally found some info on this and wanted to get it out there again. I am looking for an '86 Red 110 County V8
VIN number SALLDHMV7BA237676
Engine Number 22G00134
Original rego CTI 060
Has been re-registered in Victoria with a new registration number, but unsure what it is.
Current registration was cancelled (due to non payment) on 15/07/2016 So the chances are it is still about!
This is as much info as I could squeeze out of Vicroads which is more than I expected.
I have done as many searches as I can online and came up with nothing.
I had to ring Jaguar Land Rover themselves to get the VIN but they could only tell me the vehicle is out there registered somewhere under a new rego, but no more than that (privacy laws)
Has anyone got any ideas on how to track this vehicle down now that I have the VIN?

Me again, sorry everyone for persisting with this but once i set my self to do something...

So I've gotten lucky of late and (don't ask me how but i had to pull a lot of strings!) I have gotten some really useful info off of Vicroads. So here it is,

1) Current owner has had the car since the 13/08/99
2) Current owner purchased the vehicle from Tiny Town Prestige Vehicles on Nepean hwy Greenvale.
3) Current owner installed lpg on 20/04/2000 at Bayswater Fleet Maintenence pty ltd
4) Rego was changed from CTI 060 to MI 110 (my 110) at some stage (date unknown.
5) Rego was changed again on 15/06/15 to 1EU4MG
6) Rego was allowed to lapse and was cancelled on 15/07/16

So as you can see this is all a big help. Obviously my first job tomorrow (only opened the letter from vicroads this evening) is to ring the two business mentioned (they both still exist) and see if they have any records, but armed with the new rego's i thought i would put it out there again as MI 110 is a fairly rememberable rego and obviously owned by a Land Rover enthusiast. Please spread the word far and wide and help me bring the old girl home!

It seems strange that it was only purchased a year ago but has already been taken off the road.

Be prepared for the fact it may have been damaged or being used as a parts car.

EDIT: I missed that you said it was the same owner. Maybe the owner has just bought a new landie (or perentie) and transferred the MI 110 rego over.

Just typed MI 110 into the Vicroads rego checker and it is currently registered on another vehicle. And guess what, its a new Land Rover Defender 110 that was purchased on 11/07/2015. So I guess what has happened is the owner took the plates off his old County and re-registered it with new plates so they could then use the MI 110 plates on their new rig.. They paid the rego for the first year and then let it lapse. So now I am armed with the new vehicles Vin number as well. So does anyone know someone driving a Green 110 2015 defender with the plates MI 110??? Getting closer!

I'm hot on the tail. I have just called Land Rover Australia with the details of the owners new defender. They told me it was sold through ULR Land Rover Malvern. I rang them and they are looking into whether they can contact the owner on my behalf.... Fingers Crossed.. Also, the dealership that sold the car in 1999 (last time it changed hands) are digging through their files to see if they have records. It is amazing how helpful these business are when you tell them why you are looking for it, but Privacy is obviously the big brick wall I keep running into. Good to know people don't hand out your details willy nilly but makes it hard for a sentimental like me!

Trust me, it is doing my head in! Especially when you speak to people knowing they've got the info you want on a screen in front of them! I was wondering whether any of my old ones were still around...... But the most recent (1961 2a), I sold in 1969 or70! And I would probably have to do a bit of scratching to find the details (numbers etc) of any of them. The Series 1 perhaps would be identifiable by an oil pressure and temperature gauge that were edge reading and scretwed to the RH side of the instrument box. (1956 88 hardtop)

I found my first ever vehicle, which happened to be a landy, recently, after hunting without luck, it came up on trade-me in NZ....didn't get to see her in person, but photos and video, was nice to see her still going strong. 1985 on left, 2016 on right.....

Over the years there have so many story's about Land Rover's . This one has been amazing . A young man set himself on a mission to find a vehicle ? A Red 110 County that he and his family traveled around Australia in for over a year . In spit of the many dead ends , he keep going ! Most people would have gave up long ago . John keep going , I'm pleased that he found the vehicle . I've owned it for over 17 years . That's a long time , It was lovely to meet up and show him around the old girl . We exchanged story's . I am going to sell it to John , I can't think of anyone now that I could imagine deserves it more . Some time's things are meant to be . Jim :D:D

Thanks for the kind words Jim bloody well written.
Just got home after a breezy trip home in the Perentie. Thanks a lot for today and thanks for all your time. I know all Landrover owners are legends but you're up there with the best of them. I forgot to thank your daughter for the cup of tea as well if you could pass that on. It was amazing seeing the old girl today and as soon as I rolled up the familiarity was unbelievable. To the point of overwhelming! Its a credit to you that the vehicle has remained largely unchanged and kept in good nick over the last couple of decades. I had to keep reminding myself that you have more of a history with the vehicle than we had (17 yrs vs 10 yrs) so the fact that you agreed to sell it to me at such short notice and for a fair price is awesome. Can't thank you enough and can't wait to catch up when it comes time to pick her up. Just cracking a beer to celebrate!![emoji482][emoji482]

I'm still not sure what my plan is totally, part of it will be along these lines but with my Mum. Unfortunately during the past six years since I started this hunt my old man passed away. This was the main drive to fire the hunt up again and track CTI 060 down. Mum loved it as much as Dad did so I think she'll blow a valve when she sees it sitting where it used to be parked at the farm! The best thing is the plug for the camper trailer is right where we left it so it'll be a quick job to hook it back up!

Already checked that and i've kicked a goal there too, that combination can be re-used for that vehicle only. Because it was issued to that car it can be re-issued but only to that car. One of the many queries i've had for vicroads the last few weeks!

Don't worry, story will continue as I will be using this thread to detail the 'restoration'. I use restoration loosely as I am still a bit undecided on what I will do. After looking at the car I realised the bumps and scrapes and faded paint all form a part of the character of the car, a ground up restoration would remove a lot of that character. I think what I'll end up doing will be more of a 'tidy up'.
I told my two sisters today that I'd tracked it down after 6 years of searching, and after there first reactions of disbelief, wondering 'why' and thinking I was a weirdo, they both called back, one of them nearly in tears, and told me they get 'why' and how they have always thought of CTI 060 whenever they see a defender cruising down the road. Even though the family has had about 10 Land Rover's between us over the years, this one has always stuck in our minds. We have all based our interests in life on the trip we did in this thing, and any family gathering usually has a story or memory from 'the trip' in it. The plan is to park it in the garage with the old camper on the back and send Mum in there to grab something. Watch this space!

After a 21 year hiatus, the County formerly known as CTI 060, has returned to its original home. Albeit in need of a bit of tlc after 31 years of offroad action, its in generally good nick and a great base for a bit of a refurbishment. Watch this space to see it return to its former glory. Big thanks again to Jim, for agreeing to part with it even though he has owned it for longer than we ever did, and also to Jason for making the connection. Hopefully one day we can all go for a scoot in the old girl.
Next step, work out a plan to replace the tired p76 motor Jim put in years ago... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/12/620.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/12/621.jpg

In 1999 when I brought this 110 , that I called The Red Rooter . I had no idea of it's history other than it had had a service at Esperance . I do know there is something special about this truck . I kept it for 17 years , buying another two after this one . I never really wanting to part with it . Then through this forum the request came ? Someone is looking for my 110 county . I couldn't be more pleased how this story has gone . It has now gone back to John and his family . Once he puts his own mark on it I think they will get a lot of pleasure from the old girl as I have . I can only wish him and his young family all the very best . Lovely to see it go through those gates , she's gone home . Jim :)
