getting the rig back up to scratch for some touring next year
my poly airs failed this year, pretty sure they are 10+ years old, do i replace them or
fit a helper spring like the 130's have, has anybody fitted dual/double springs to a 110? or
or do i just have a second set of springs for touring?
or is there a progressive spring available?

Kelvin,
I am up to the same decision almost, I have a set of 130 twin springs sitting here, Matt (rovercare) has tempted me to think about air springs, OR just fit Defender standard coils and remove the ride leveller which is non functional I suspect.
I am leaning towards the KISS twin coil set up personally. If it proves too heavy,(I will have LR tank, and a fair bit of gear most of the time) I can just remove the inner coils and refit once a year when towing camper etc.

Just need the inner spring seats and hardware from a 130. Difficult to get new, but try around a few suspension joints I was able to obtain a set once from someone who removed it all to lift the 130:o and was about to chuck it all out:(
I bought the set I am using from a customer who wanted to change all his springs and shocks, they had bought a set from UK.

G'day,
I have had the inner springs fitted and also the 130 on the front. my Defender is the new Puma 110. I am quite happy with the setup. Once you have a load and we have constant load with drawer set up and bits and pieces fitted. The ride is quite good. On our previous TD5 110 we had Polyairs. These were good also.

Thanks Jake, yes I will have a storage set up, spare wheel carrier, LR tank, second batt and HF radio etc etc in the back so I'm happy you think the ride in yours is OK.

I recently removed my inners just to see what it was like and i like it
Last time i went over the weighbridge it tared at 2660kg and I'm carrying at least 100-150kg more gear now.
I need to lift the rear a little again just to get some rake back but really like the better ride and believe it or not handling of the reduced spring rate in the back.
Like JC I don't know whether to go full bags or drop the rear spring rate a bit more and use some longer coils with Firestone poly bags up the guts.......

Just had Polyairs fitted today by Graeme Cooper, with a new set of 320lb White Tiger rear springs. The coils alone have immediately lifted the back of my 110 up nice and high again, with more avail from the Polyairs if needed. I had them try the 270lb springs but apparently they sagged.
The ride quality is excellent and I can now hike up the bags for towing or mega loads without compromising unladen ride quality.
As an aside, as I mentioned elsewhere, I had them replace the front 225lb HD (130 spec) front springs which I had found to be too hard, with 180lb long coils - and as I suspected, ride quality is instantly better with no sag and no loss of cornering control.
Am going to run them in for a few thousand km and will right in a report, but so far, amd in love with the ride/handling/load compromise. Bilstein shocks all round.

G'day Justin,
Have you decided in a drawer system yet. I have just had a system built (I'm a lousy builder). I have a system that is a little different, not all drawers as we found out the hard way when towing the t-van that we could not access a drawer in our previous car, which meant I could not get to my recovery gear. I will see if I can up load into another section or if you are interested can email what we have done

G'day Kelvin,
I also have tried both. First polyairs which failed due to rubbing on the coils, then I managed to find a set of inner brackets from a Perentie RFSV and fitted a set of inner coils (WB Statesman front springs will fit straight in). This setup I have used for about 15yrs. Great for load carrying but a little harsh when empty. The advantage is that you can easily remove the inner and have a good ride until you want to go on a trip or carry a heavy load. I wouldn't have polyairs again - waste of money imho.

These bump stops are on my 110 c/chassis.They touch the diff when I've got a ton on and ute sit's level, they still allow some upward movement from then on. When unladen they allow spring to work normally, though I suspect articulation might be affected -never been a problem
They were on ute when I bought it, local "expert" at accessories store reckon they're standard L/R but I haven't seen them on other 110's (were they fitted to 110 c/chassis?)
Would be easy to fit and remove if not needed, just 2x2 bolts

Brett, you have sway bars on your Tdi 110 cab/chassis :o! Mine never came with them. Do you know if it came with them from new? I have always just assumed the utes never had them. I bought mine when it was 5 years old, but it was ex-government so I assumed it hadn't been messed with.
Now that I have a 130 I've realised what I've been missing all these years with on-road performance and why I struggle to keep up with 110 wagons over mountain roads.

OK I promised a report on the new springs after my 900km drive to MEL. with the new White Tiger 180lb fronts and 320lb rears (with PolyAirs). The vehicle was modestly laden - 45L extra fuel in the Dolium RHS rear quarter tank, the extra weight of the wheel carrier and steel rack and a couple of boxes. Tyres set to 38 PSI front and 40 back.
The first difference I noticed was the compliance of the front springs. Less skipping and bumping over road joins, and more general comfort. More travel too - it's nice feeling some of that travel instead of a jolt with the HDs. The rears though made a huge difference. The extra spring rate has made cornering and stability dramatically better than factory - noticeable when overtaking B-doubles at speed and not getting shoved and wobbled around anywhere as much.
The rate in the rears is firmer than before but not too harsh - just a good compromise. I left the poly airs at the delivered 9 PSI setting, which is just enough to stop the bags contacting the coil gaps and provide a secondary firmness in very large drop offs.
All in all the ride and handling is hugely improved over the standard rears and HD fronts. This will only improve laden, and am looking forward to trying them out in NOV with a trailer and load. I would recommend the White Tiger/PolyAir combination highly.

As far as I can tell swaybar looks original- 110's a '95 model (late '94 build), I've only had it for 3years
Some of the loads I carry would be pretty hairy without it!

Oh yeah  - 1.2 tonne of link blocks on the back or even just a couple of hundred kilograms of timber up on the racks and you're "driving Miss Daisy".

Not OE, looks like an Aeon Rubber to me.
If it is, Repco used to market them in Oz, been around forever.

I've heard of this happening a few times with Polyairs, and the Oz made Polyairs seem to fail where the air line feeds into the bag too.
A number of people on here have sourced the Firestone poly bags from the US and so far I can't recall anyone reporting a failure, which doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but I'm just wondering if their QC is a bit better ?

Unusual to see a 110 cab/chassis with ARB's front and rear, but the chassis mounts are there so it's just a bolt in.
I've driven a 130 with a camper body on the back and it was hairy in the corners, and it was running 540lb+ the standard 140lb inners
Talk about wallow and roll....but it did tare out at over 3 tonne unladen.
My 130 has had a few hundred kg of steel up top (the Rhino racks were bowing  ) and it was fine with the standard 330lb+140lb spring combo, and I was expecting it to wallow around with the CofG so high after the experience with the other 130.

Brett, I think you'll find they are Toyota 80 series factory rear bump stops. I have a set I was going to trial in a D1 for heavy towing, but never got round to it.
Might use them in the 110 but:D

rick130, roll bar is rear only on my 110 (fronts are on 130's ?) It's a bit stiff in the rear unladen (good on road), but I wouldn't be without it loaded. Looks all original kit, maybe was an option-

Hi Brett,
yes, 130's have front and rear ARB's.
Interesting yours has a rear one, a fella I know here has a Tdi 110 cab/chassis and it doesn't have any, the same as his TD5 wagon, but I'm sure they could've been optioned with one or fitted afterwards easily enough.
BTW, after me saying that the Firestone bags seemed to be pretty well bulletproof read the last half of this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/115781-firestone-coilrite-airbags.html
