View Full Version : Xrox bar added to Puma

Hi Guys
Just added an Xrox steel tube bar to the Puma.
Really happy with the look, the fit and finish of the bar.
Also went with the steering guard and the headlight grills.
Front end has not dropped at all, so no need to replace springs at this stage.
Some photos attached.
Cheers

Hi Greenhornet
Did you get your bar from Gordon?
I ordered my XRox bar at the Sydney 4wd expo at Eastern Creek,it took 7 week to arrive:mad: And when it did finally arrive, the front swivel recovery points weren't on the bar.Told that they had finally tracked some down, and that Gordon had ordered some, and they would get them from him and send to me:(.At least another 2 weeks wait.
But I did fit the bar,and it does fit well, except 4 10mm nuts /bolts and washers were missing.
To say I am a little disappointed is an understatement.
Yours looks good, with all the bits on it.I was told that Gordon sold the bar off his truck, that is why I asked.

Sorry to say, but I agree with Stig and Dobbo's comments too. It looks nicely made but the styling / design doesn't suit the car at all imo, but my opinion is irrelevant really!
Glad you like it.

low....it doesn't look any lower the an arb or tjm bar, it think the bash plate thingy that makes it look low
i'm sure greenhornet will give us an update as time goes on

I'm a "form follows function" person.
For me it goes like this:
Leaving the wings exposed to roo strikes worries me and then I need to mount the lights, the winch and the aerial.
After that am I concerned about the compromised approached angle.
But greenhornet has his own criteria and I respect that.

Funny, but the bar actually sits higher and closer to the front of the vehicle than an ARB bar,so the approach angle is actually better. The side protection is obviously not as high, but it depends on what the vehicle is used for.And as far as winch protection is concerned,it is protected by a large piece of metal, easily as thick as any ARB bar,so that is of no concern.
All these factors were taken into account, before I put my money down for mine.
And I will take function over looks ,any time.Hell,I bought a Defender didn't I

You are correct,it is the bash plate fitted to greenhornets vehicle that gives the impression that it compromises approach angle and sits low.
I don't have the bash plate, and mine fits high and very close to the front of the vehicle.

Interesting, those swivel recovery points look exactly like mine which I got from MM4x4.
My question is. Is there any rienforcing behind the fitting? If not how thick is the steel that they are passing through? As after a few serious pulls on mine, they have managed to distort my ARB bar (a small amount) and I am considering changing how they are mounted.

The swivel mounts are probably the same as sold in the UK.I know the ones for my bar have been ordered overseas, and am still waiting for delivery. But they have to be modified here, because the metal in the Xrox bar is thicker, than what the swivel was intended to fit,and also it has reinforcing plate mounted behind each of the mounting points.

Hi Guys
Don’t feel bad if some of you don’t like the bar, you should be able to give an honest opinion here.
Honesty is what makes this forum great. If I wanted a biased opinion then I would believe everything that was written in my 4x4 mag!
The bar sits no lower than any of the other bars on offer and it actually has a good approach angel.
I think my camera angle has made it look lower than what it actually is. (the bash plate probably doesn’t help either).
Haven’t had a chance to give it a run in the bush yet, but will keep you updated on how it goes.
As Wayne states there are reinforcing at the back of the bar for the swivel points, I will probably always try to use both points to share the load though.
Winch?…….lights?……….on the list but a while off yet. ;)
Wayne, I did get the bar from Gordon, but it is not the one from Gordon’s truck.
Cheers :)

Its your truck, as long you like it is all that matters. Aesthetics are an objective thing. Big :BigThumb: from me.

I think it looks lower than the RovaCraft / Equipe style bars (see: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/106445-finally-arrived-new-puma-110-zermatt-silver.html#post1276935) - but no doubt it's stronger. Have since added spotties (Lightforce 140s), UHF antenna and Britpart headlight protectors. Very happy with mine so far. Enjoy it GreenHornet - it'a all good.

There is a bit of an optical illusion, caused by the different style of bars, the main body of the XRox bar is very substantial, but on my old Defender,it only sits about 10mm below the chassis rails, but you are correct in that the bars to the sides, that are mounted to the main body, especially the lower one,sit lower.Mind you,no lower than the body of an ARB type bar,and the whole bar sits further back, giving better approach angle. But yours looks good.I am probably a bit lie Greenhornet, and just wanted something out of the norm, that will do the job.

Pat,
I knew I took this photo for a reason. This is the bar Rovacraft imported (on an aircon County):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/10/418.jpg
Gav110 has the same bar on his Puma, and it can be fitted with high mount winch which I am yet to do. It will require cutting the radiator grill-might void your warranty though :p I asked for a bar suited to the high mount and County so it may be that there are different versions.
Note: The rear wheels were up on ramps so the approach angle is a bit better than shown

Bit of talk in this thread about "high mount winch". What is a "high mount winch" and is there a "low mount wich'? I am new to winches!

The current Hi-mount is the Warn 8274-M50. The motor sits above the drum. They are much faster than the low mount winches.
Here's my 8274-m50

Low mount is the normal type winch that most have, say the Warn XP, where the winch motor, gearbox and drum are in line.

OK, so the term 'high mount' relates to where the motor is mounted on the winch. Not where the winch is mounted on the vehicle. Much appreciated Psimpson7.

Karl, thier horses for courses.I've had both and prefere the high mount for it's speed.I also think the gear drive on the HM is better than the worm and wheel on LM but thats a personal thing. Pat

I don't want to shanghi this thread, so last question(s): in general terms are the HMs more bulky; and for the same motor size (ie hores power or watts or what ever), which has the better load or pulling power (as opposed to speed)?

My current Warn HM was better than my Thomas LM and is quicker and seems to be less troubled hauling than my mates XP9000.I do have Arc Welder cables powering mine so that would be helping. Pat

Probably the biggest non-competition benefit of the high mount over low mounts is the brake is seperate to the drum, so you don't have as much risk of overheating the newer hi-tech ropes.

Makes a huge difference to weight over steel cable and makes all the difference in the world when your lugging an armfull of it up a hill ;)

Pat I would be looking at the states and the amsteel blue rope while the dollar is good...you can also get it in diff colours, we bought our dark green rope couple of years ago the same way. cost about 300bux for something like 30mtrs (could of been slightly more cant remember) and that was for the thicker stuff...dont quote me think it was like 8/16 or something like that...that was also with big yellow hook and an abrasion guard

It is my understanding that heat should only be a significant issue for synthetic winch rope when powering out, where extensive use of the brake may be required. For normal recovery where the rope is drawn onto the drum, braking would only occur for short periods or to hold the load, and in these situations little heat would be generated.

Yes.
They make them for 110's.
Not sure if there is any difference between a puma bar and a 110 bar though.

I've got the same bar from Rovacraft on my Puma and have fitted an Ironman 12,000lb winch which is nice and snug. I'm very happy with the set up although I had to cut the grille to run the wiring. Just two weeks after doing that I saw another defender with the same winch where the owner had mounted the control box on top of the A bar using the driving light mounts. Thus the grille didn't require cutting and the control box was out of the way so it would receive less of a dunking during water crossings. If only I'd thought of that... or seen the other defer a few weeks earlier! This bar (without the winch) was previously on my 1985 county and transferred across OK.
