could have posted in the GPS section, but after specific D4/D3 installation experience!
Hi all, I did not purchase the OEM GPS in my D4 SE based on well discussed reasons (price and performance). I fully intended to purchase a Hema or equivalent unit cause I really want to an OziExplorer type product for 4WDing.
Anybody replaced the in dash LCD with one of these:
7" LCD IN DASH CAR GPS DVD DiVX IPOD PLAYER ELEGANT - eBay Players, Audio, Video, Car, Truck Parts, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 19-Oct-10 11:04:25 AEDST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-LCD-IN-DASH-CAR-GPS-DVD-DiVX-IPOD-PLAYER-ELEGANT_W0QQitemZ270650098042QQihZ017QQcategoryZ15 8520QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ht_18039 wt_964)
They appear to be just the thing I'm after - and cheap! :D:D
Anybody know a good installer in Brisbane?

The D4 does not have the same double din opening as the D3. So check the depth.
You will need to put a sceen in the screen space at the top of the centre console.
You may be better getting a screen for that spot and putting an in car PC under the passenger seat.

Hey Michael,
Speak to the service guys at ULR Malvern Vic. They have Discos come in with a similar system that the owners paid around $350.00 for, and apparently they work brilliant.
Cheers, Craig

Hi Michael
I'm the guy that put the double din 7"screen in from china, $300 that the ULR guys are talking about.........but very few instructions, which are in Chinlish....took a long time to work out how to operate everything.
It has DVD, CD, Radio, Ipod, GPS (I've loaded Route 66, which comes with it, and I have Oziexplorer .....both work really well.) USB anything, TV, but I don't use it and a few other gizmos.
Stuart Dixon and Damian have told a few guys.
i've had it in now for 6mths and it's been over some pretty rough tracks up north, still good......bought one for my son in law who's doing a 6mth trip around Oz......he's very pleased with it.
Cheers Murray

Murray, thanks for the info and glad it's worked out well for you! Just a couple more questions:
- did you install it or did you get a professional to do it for you?
- do you have a D4, if so what about the OEM radio/CD
- are you still able to use steering wheel controls?
Thanks,
Michael

I am not sure whether it would work for a D4 the HU is not a normal din it is connected to the screen and I am not sure if a double din unit would fit given the depth of the DVD player in the unit.
Would like to know though.

So does anyone know of a quality installer in Brisbane? I don't think I'm likely to find someone who as installed a 3rd party DVD/stereo in a D4 so will just need to pick someone who will treat it with care and love!:D

Sorry Micky.....have been travelling.
I have the D3, not a D4..........sorry about that, but in a D3 it's very simple to install yourself. you need to purchase the surround that matches the dash and aquire the interface cable, ISO to D3, whis infact the BMW connection. the ISO is the connect type on the rear of the unit.
I do not have the audio steering controls on my D3, but there is provision on the unit to connect them.
reading the blogs, I think you may have a problem with the depth in order to fit the unit, BUT did you consider the single din unit where the screen slides out and then sits up vertically..............same technology, just a different unit for tighter situations. From memory, i think the unit price is the same......still a 7" screen
Hope this helps.

Bummer. Back to the drawing board for D4 ideas.

Looks like I weas wrong :oops2: .......again:angel:
The D4 unit looks like a double din. However there are other functions the unit controls: parking sensors and hazards for a start.
So same conclusion; can't be done. :D

Get a non in dash 7 inch GPS for the space where the screen goes. I take it you have the small screen there?
Put that screen where the cup holders are?
