Hi all, I realise many threads deal with this topic, but unfortunately I was not able to find anything that applies. Anyhow, here goes...

I own a Freelander 2 HSE with 18 inch alloys. The current Continental street tyres (235x60R18) are approaching the end, and I've started looking for all-terrain alternatives. As you can imagine there aren't a whole lot of options out there - I've managed to find Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts, Goodyear Wrangler ATs and some others.

Firstly, assuming I go with the same size, are there any options that I've missed and should consider? From my research it looks like the Pirelli's are OK.

Secondly, has anyone fitted a different size? Something like 255x55R18, which is fairly close to the originals to not warrant a major change in speedometer accuracy. Any ideas on options here are very welcome.

Thanks for your insight, appreciate it!

You could probably go 245/60/18 without too much worry and will increase the width by a centimetre and the diameter by 12mm giving you a 6mm lift so better off road. Good thing is it is still legal as well. The 255/55/18 results in a slight diameter decrease but a 20 mm width increase which may scrub the body on full lock. I'm no pro on this use as a guideline only. Mike

I think the main consideration to bear in mind when fitting different size tyres is the rolling radius of the tyre. The original tyres would have had a radius to match the gearbox/diff ratios, and the speedometer drive. So long as the rolling radius (measured in millimeters) remains the same you will have no adverse effect on the speedometer. Yes there will be minor variations as the tyres wear down from new, but that is factored in when the cars are designed.
I guess the other important need to keep the rolling radius the same is that the speedo drive signal is split in two directions; one to the speedometer, the other to the powertrain control module for processing gear selection, throttle position etc. The speedometer effect is only part of the considerations. Yes wheel speed sensors are also considered but their signal is more for the operation of the ABS system.
Cheers,
Andrew

I'm very interested in this thread also as my tyre depth is getting low. My "findings" are just the same as yours renier, namely Scorpion AT, Wrangler ATR or maybe just the stock Continentals UHP.
Let us know what you finally decide and what you think of them.
