View Full Version : 86 inch S1 with a ute cab roof?

Distinguished Colleagues,
A couple of questions....
1) Is there a solid cab that I could fit to my S1 that would turn it into a ute? i.e - the rear tub open?
2) I think the answer to this next one is no, but were there any 86 inch S1's fitted with such an item from factory? I've seen them on 80 inch S1's.
3) Anyone got one that they might be willing to part with, or that I could at least take a look at?

1. Yes
2. I guess it could have been ordered from the factory with the pickup (ute) cab.
3. Just sold one in 'Markets' (mind you it's yet to be collected & fully paid for....).

Yes - it was an option. Rare in Australia, but apparently common in the UK. Cab is the same as was standard for the 107/109.

Home made cabs for Series 1s were quite common, being much cheaper and easier than buying a new canvas when the original was past its use by date, particularly for a vehicle that by then was often no longer in its first prime. These cabs varied from very rough to better than the factory ones. Most commonly made from galvanised iron riveted or even tied with wire to the hoops, but some were made from sheet aluminium or more commonly plywood on a wooden frame, and copied the appearance of the factory ones.

OK - perhaps we can arrange a time and I'll come over and check it out. :) What kind of knick is it in - do you have a picture of it? And is it a genuine Land Rover roof ?

Normally included a heater, internal light, lined doors, locks on doors, roof lining, sometimes a second wiper, metal door check traps, lined firewall, footwell and tunnel and rubber mats. But fitment varied.

Its a factory ute cab, same as the onesfitted to the 107"/109" pick ups.
It in very good shape though needs a repaint also still has the sliding rear windows too.
Will try to post up a pic soon.

Sounds good - If I were to get one I'd like it to be original. So, I take it a 107/109 ute hard top will fit a 86/88 too?
PS - Can you PM me some details so I might take a look?

Ah ha - so - there is an actual version for an 86 then. ;) How do I tell the real one for an 86" ?
I love your S1 Larry - just reckon a S1 looks brilliant with these cabs. Some don't - I do.

The distance from the rear of the door to the rear of the cab is shorter for the 80". (I'll measure mine tomorrow if I remember:angel:)
From what I've been told, the genuine 80" ones are very hard to find, so most of the ones you find would be the 86/88/107/109"'.

Just to confuse things, there are also different versions of the rear wall .
Bobslandies knows which is which.:)

I wanted the thing topless 'cos I don't like the look of these trucks with a tilt. They look very cool with a cab roof but - hence my desire to find one. ;)
The chaps that have posted in this thread telling me you have one - can you send me some details (address, phone number, and - if you're selling it - asking price etc) so I have an idea please?

Well - I'll be in the topless drive. Looks like the tilt might just get taken off - this time permanently, cos the chaps who have proudly told me they have a cab don't seem interested in coming forward!
Buggar it - I'm going nude! Who needs a bloody roof?

That's alright for you ragtop people, if I take my roof off the seatbelt mount goes with it.:(:(
Agree with Numpty though, they look great naked, or with the tilt, but not so keen on the truck cab.

Cheers, Mick.

With all this talk of cabs, I thought I would drop a 86 cab on a 80 and see what it looked like.
Move the "B pillar" back a bit and it would fit OK even though longer than the proper one.
That would put the triangular galv gusset back against the back wall.
Might try that later.
