I was going to post this up and let people try and guess what I'd got. Obviously that wasn't going to work, so here are some pictures of the latest accessory for the Puma. :D

Moto-Lita (http://www.moto-lita.co.uk/) Mark4 15" Wheel.

This is 40mm smaller in diameter than the standard wheel on the Puma.

Feels great, only been for a short drive though to check the indicators worked OK. Which they do. There are two pins in the back of the boss. No modifications to the vehicle are needed.

The grip is a little softer and more tactile, probably because of the leather over the plastic. The wheel isn't that much smaller but it makes a surprising difference to the space in front of the driver and the right elbow room. Also there is no obstruction of the instruments (this is a flat wheel not a dished one).

I'm leaving the wire spoke wheels for when I can afford a Morgan :p

What advantages/disadvantages to having either a all or large diameter wheel ? If you have mor room with the 15" would the 13" give even more room ?

Bling, Bling. Looks good.
Now you’ve gone and done it. I want one now!!!!!
“Darling. You know how you said we have to save money for the kids education, well you see the steering wheel on the Defender……….” (wish me luck) :lol2: :lol2:

The slightly smaller wheel gives more room but going too small increases the problems of manoeuvring at low speed so I don't want a 13" wheel. Very small steering wheels aren't for Defenders... unless it's a Bowler.

is there a deal going, that if i buy the smaller wheel,, they throw in the bowler to use it on??:cool:

That looks fantastic. My budget was never going to last long. And if I buy the laminated one for the SIII I can pretend I'm driving a DB4. I'm sold!

Now that would match the rest of the inside of the SVX and give a bit more room around the guts as well! :)

It looks fantastic.
Much trouble getting the standard steering wheel off?

dmdigital
22nd October 2010, 05:15 PM
No very easy, just need a 22mm socket and give the wheel a gentle but firm pull on both sides. The centre padding of the original just unclips.

Is there anyone with an SVX that wants to swap their gear knobs for some really flash looking black plastic ones

...or know where I can pick up the two of them in alloy?

Yes, you'll get the pair here, as fitted to the German 'Experience' Limited Edition.

Matzker.de Land Rover Neufahrzeuge Gebrauchtfahrzeuge. Tuning und Zubehör für Defender, Discovery, Range Rover und Freelander. - Schaltknauf-Garnitur Experience - Defender TD4 (http://www.matzker.de/product_info.php?products_id=1240)

Not cheap though at 295 Euro.

I don't think much of the original plastic job and have scoured the web looking for alternatives. Problem with the Puma is the gearknob is part of the gearstick so its a very specialised part.

If you find something else or a cheaper source then please let us know.

Thanks for that info.

Hmmm just had a look at the manual. Hadn't realised that about the gear lever:mad:

295 EUR :eek2: and it's not anything like the SVX in looks and has a stick on selection diagram

Think I'll stick with the plastic one, who knows an SVX wreck might come along

Do you need to buy a boss kit ? When I looked there was no boss kit for 2007+ just 1996 onwards I think, which boss kit did you choose if you did buy one ?

Unsure if I bought one weather 14" would be to small or the 15" such as you purchased is perfect, with a small decrease in size being perfect

dmdigital

Yes you need a Boss kit. The Puma wheel should be 48 spline but there are reports of some vehicles coming out with a smaller spline count. So it pays to take the wheel off and check as I don't know if this applies to AU spec 90/110/130. Mine was 48 spline.
The boss has two holes at the rear where you need to tap in two pins (supplied) to work with the indicator cancelling ring.

There are no modifications to the steering shroud or anything else required. Moto-Lita were very good to deal with.

The 14" would start to intrude on the instruments and IMO would also be too small. I've also been informed a dished 15" will intrude as well as it comes out further from the column. I think I said this in my first post, the 15" is 40mm smaller in diameter than the OEM wheel - approximately 420mm vs 380mm.

I have one of those wheels to go in my Td5. Came out of one of my Fiats many years ago. I just need to get the original wheel off to count the splines, so I can order the boss kit.

Looks good.

Hi dmdigital,

This wheel looks great, and is very tempting, but I would be interested in whether it would be ADR compliant (no padding on the boss), and consequently, whether it could cause roadworthiness or insurance problems.

Did you have any problem with this?

Cheers,

Lionel

dmdigital
23rd October 2010, 12:10 PM
I don't have an answer to that Lionel. It would be easy enough to get the boss cap padded if required.

Hi Derek ,
I find the outer ring of the standard 98 defer wheel to be a bit too thick for comfort for my small hands-much preferred the old Rangie wheel.
Do these give a better grip for the smaller hand?
Thanks,
Mary

The Puma's wheel is a smaller diameter grip than my 98MY Tdi's and this is about the same as the Puma's in grip diameter

Yes they probably do: Moto-Lita, the Classic British Steering Wheel (http://www.moto-lita.co.uk/our-products/your-car/your-options.aspx?CB_ID=20&CR_ID=162)
You could even get a wood rim one :D

It's the shape of the gear knob I don't like so the SVX special would not do it for me.

Continuing my search for a replacement I've now discovered from a post by fred95 on blacklandy forum that the 295 EUR only buys the replacement knobs and gaiter and not even the stick!

Apparently you need to cut off the existing plastic knob and attach the new knob to the original stick, so it seems it's doable with whatever knob you desire. Just need to be brave enough vandalise the original.

I MAY be interested as well if we could organise for the wheel and boss kit required for the PUMA.

I wonder if we would get some savings ?
