View Full Version : Just had the Puma serviced

Just had the Puma serviced, the 2 year one, and when I got it home I noted that they carried out a ZMAX induction service and R&R air intake duct and de- carbonize. Does anyone know what ZMAX service is? The truck seems to be running very well lately, hope this continues.

I just did a google search for ZMAX and it seems to be an application of a substance that smells a bit like snake oil.;)

Allen, if you don’t mind me asking. Where are you getting your servicing done. Ozy Park or Cannington?

Ozy Park, very happy with the guys there, they have helped me out on many occasions.

Read somewhere on the Defender2.net forums that the UK dealers also use some sort of EGR cleaner during services.

Hi Allan.
What you say backs a mate of mine who also used to have his Puma serviced in Ozy Park.
He was very pleased with them but found them a bit expensive.
Seems as if things there have improved immensely since they moved the service manager named Rush*** something or other down to another dealership.:D

Just prior to my last service the EGR valve was knocking audibly...5 knocks on switching off the engine as it cleaned itself. Now it is silent. So I presume that they gave it the once over with something that didn't smell like snake oil.....I wonder what it was?

Can only say that Gordon and John are willing to go that bit further to help. I would not take my vehicles anywhere else.

Yes - it is audible when working properly. One way I can tell my valve is bunged is by watching (the tacho) and listening to the engine at start up (from cold) at idle - the rpm will vary slightly when the EGR valve is bunged up. Clean it (or in my case - put a new one in) - no idle variation.

Would it not be better to remove it rather than clean it?
Dave.

Yes - it would be - but this brings the engine management light on as air flow is restricted by blanking with the Puma setup - hence the reason blanking kits are still being worked out for this model.
A German chap on Defender2 is saying his kit with software patch should be available towards the end of this year. Once something like this is out, tested and all good, I'll be blanking mine off for good.

We can't have every Puma owner rushing off to the dealer on this one.;)

So let me qualify what I wrote above:

There are degrees of audibility.

If you can hear it knocking over the sound system then that is too loud.

If you can't hear it then that doesn't mean that it isn't doing its job its just that you can't hear it from inside the cab.

My point was that the EGR valve operation was much quieter after the service. The EGR valve was louder than I've heard it before prior to that service. Therefore something mysterious thing had been done during the service to decrease the volume. I presume that it had been cleaned/de-carbonised. The idle speed is steady so I presume the blessed EGR is still functioning. :D

A good point too, Mahn. I have to listen out to hear mine.

Must say my bomb is very quiet since service. I now would rather drive it than the wife's TD5.
