Hi All,

I'm only posting this here as I am hoping for quick advice.

Has anyone successfully used one of the VW "99" variable wiper relays on a TD5 Defender. (mine is 2004 Xtreme)?

This thread explains it.:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/115004-variable-wiper-intermittance-your-defer-cheap-simple.html

I have posted a problem I have experienced, and am wondering if it is because I have a defective relay, OR because they work in a Puma and not a TD5.

If somone has one fitted and working successfully could they please post the information to the above thread, and I will then know whether I should return my relay for replacement.

Any info would be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Lionel

Hi Lionel,

They do work but there are two very similar relays from what I've read. From what I recall it sounds like you've got the wrong relay. There's a good amount of info over on the Defender2.net forum about them being fitted to Puma's and Td5's. It's on my list to do when I get around to it.

May just be a dodgy relay.

Bosch Australia could not supply so I bought one on ebay and although the ad says used it looked like new.

Wiper Relay, Audi, VW, 357 955 531, 99, used, Warranty: eBay Motors (item 290488559640 end time Nov-15-10 10:55:59 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Wiper-Relay-Audi-VW-357-955-531-99-used-Warranty-/290488559640?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a277a818)

Works a treat on the Puma. Without doubt one of the quickest & best improvements for least cost.

Yeah, that'd be right! Just my luck to get a dodgy one. I can send it back for a replacement (to the UK), but I wish I could find someone with my model (TD5) that has had one working properly, before I send it.

The only people that have contacted me are Puma owners.

Cheers,

Lionel

As far as I can gather, looking at all the postings I can find on the Defender2 site, this is the correct relay. It is 357 955 531 and has the number 99 on the top face, and 4496 on one side. It is marked VW and also DDP DODUCO PAB6-GF30.

This all corresponds correctly with the info I have looked up, so it is more than likely that this is a faulty one. Before I return it though, I would like to hear from a TD5 Deefer owner who has one of these working correctly, just to be certain there is not some subtle difference between the wiper systems in the Puma & TD5 which is causing mine to remain stuck on after screen washing.

Cheers,

Lionel

There's a few posts on Defender2 about it working on a Td5. There is some other threads on here too but I can't recall if anyone in Australia has posted about a Td5 already.

Can I ask where you got it from? When I priced them locally VW wanted over $100 and Bosch was almost double VW's price :o

I got it from Stevens VW Dismantlers in the UK via eBay

GBP16.49 incl. postage.

Should be available from local wreckers, I suppose, but I didn't have time to scratch around. They are certainly a bit expensive new.

Thanks to all who replied to this post. I have tried a different relay and now everything is OK.

Could I recommend Parts Locator - the no1 autoparts directory (http://www.partslocator.com.au/)

I joined it as a private subscriber (free), and put in an inquiry with the part number and very quickly obtained several hits.

AUTOLINE 0297574474, and another recycler on 07 37156 474, who both advise they have this part in stock. I got my replacement from a recycler in Geelong Vic. ($25 + $10 postage)

Cheers,

Lionel
