Hi guys,

I had a small driveway mishap (don't ask:angel:) and managed to bend the drivers door on our Fender. NRMA have assessed it and have arranged panel beaters to fix it.

My excess is $600, so I'm wondering if it's worth while looking for another door instead. What sort of price is a second hand door is likely to be? I've seen a couple for sale for $500, but they are not the correct colour and aren't located in Brissie, so for that price I think I'd be better of letting the panel beaters have a crack.

Do you reckon there's any chance I would stumble across a cheapish door, or should I just pay my excess and get it fixed?

Cheers
Sean

Sean,

I'd been on the hunt for a rear passenger door, 2nd hand for a long time. Rare as rocking horse **** and not much cheaper than having to buy new.

Panel beater recently told me unless you can find one the same colour as your vehicle and if it's a metallic colour. They pretty much have to respray the entire side of the vehicle. If your defender is non metallic and your prepared to wait and keep looking, go the door replacement. A new door unpainted will still set you back $700-$800.

Just for the record. South Tweed Autos Smash Repairs came recommended to me and I can't speak highly enough for their workmanship and service.

Regards,
Tod.

Thanks Tod. My Defender has metalic paint (Emerald Green I think its called). I'm not keen to wait, so I think I'l just go with the repairs under insurance.

When i have been hunting around for doors i have seen them listed for as much as 1200 a door without any internals or glass, because of how hard they are to find the land rover specialist charge rediculous prices for them.

Best bet is to keep an eye out on ebay or the forum and hope some come up, i picked up 2 front county doors for 400 for the pair, not cheap exactly but 2nd hand panel standards but they are in decent condition and complete.

Blimey at that price I may consider breaking my 90 for parts :p

Ahh doors!!! I've been on the look out for a full set(4) for over a year. I came across a good set from that breaker in Adilaide -$800 per door complete but the wrong colour so respray on top of that, the sales bloke said "buy them now because they will be gone tommorow". Genuine new steel doors are approx $800 each from the dealers in Perth, Ali doors are $950-$1100 each new . By all accounts the new type(Puma) steel doors are the way to go, much stonger and a bit cheaper.

Another thing to consider is that if your vehicle is older like mine ('96 model), all the doors from that vintage will be knackered in the same places yours are right now.

Thats it my hunt will continue.

Cheers

Well, I took it into the repairer this morning, he looked at it for half a second and basically suggested that the NRMA assessor was a git, there's no way that it can be repaired. So I'm getting a new door, hopefully it will arrive on Wednesday, should have the Fender back by Friday.

The new door price was just over $1000, then they have to spray it and fit it, so I guess I'm getting value for my $600 excess...

I thought this would be the out come which door was it and how badly bent was it ?

As my brother mentioned above you have to keep an eye out for good second hand doors i just picked up 2 fronts with all trimmings and a 110 turret for just a shade under $600 they were off a county with the early lift up handles which are a much better door than the later push button jobbies
