hey im putting this on for my dad
he picked this up today it is a 1971 swb S2a,it is a local one. it has 50k original miles, was last registered in 2006, unfortunately it was in the 2007 floods and there is water in everything except the engine and also a shipping container hit it in the flood and damaged it.
rust wise it has a fair bit of surface but overall it seems really good.
the guy that owned it before said he got the engine going after the flood and changed the oils in the engine.
had a go at starting the engine today no luck the starter motor needs looking at.

Hi Papa, tell your old man he has good taste in Landies! It looks nice and original, the way I like them.

I picked up a 11/71 SWB in the same colour almost two years ago, looks almost identical except for the tyres (yours are original i'm pretty sure). Here is a picture of mine, I would love to see what other pictures you can put up.

Do you know the chassis number or PMC number? Hope the motor doesn't give too much trouble.

Cheers,

Sam

dad has pulled out the radiator. the starter motor is not working so that is the next thing to look at, as the guy we got it off said that the engine was going not long ago.cant get the original key the previous owner lost it.just wondering what is the best way to get a key cut, my 1979 s3 key fits and can turn it most of the way but just not the actual ignition stage.

There should be a number stamped on the ignition switch. Key cutting stores with a computerised key cutter could cut you an original key for that.

Failing that, online stores in the UK offer barrel and key options for sale.

do you have any idea on how much they cost.there is a guy here that has heaps of landys and he cuts them him self by taking the barrel out slowly he also said that there was a brand of truck that had similar barrels at the time

The simplest way is to take out the whole switch, and take it to a locksmith. If he can cut the key to pattern, it should cost about $10. Alternativley he can rekey the barrel, and cut some keys to fit.

However, there should be a number around the hole the key fits in. Take the number and preferably a picture of the lock, and a locksmith will cut it to pattern.

Hi Tony,

Have a look at this thread, it should help regarding getting a new key.

Well now that I am back and have some time off there has been some talk about doing some work to this.
So I may start pulling it apart this week or next and see what it is really like.
I think I would go for something in between a rebuild and a restoration.
This was suppose to be Papa smurfs but he just said that it is pretty much mine(oh great so now i get to spend more money and get the guilt of filling the shed up).

Good luck with it Tony, I reackon it's the best relaxation therapy out there playing with an old landy. I had a great time doing Smeg the S3 and cant wait to get back into Raplh (2a) in the not to distant future. It annoys me everytime I look at him sitting there under a tarp. Remember, lots of photo's!!;)

Cheers Ian

Well got it out and did a bit of stripping down(my favourite thing) and it is not too bad but it was in the '07 flood and it got up to the dash so the chassis is full of crap.
Just some photos. The main rust is in the front, there is some surface on the footwells but overall I am quite happy with it.
The plan is now to finish off the shed so we have 5 bays on one even floor to work with.
I will have a go at panel beating the tub and fenders and maybe the skirts, but I do have replacements anyway so no biggy.
Unfortunately I only an air compressor and a brush with water to clean it so far.
This will do for now as the chassis will come off later and then give it a good clean, this was more to save time cleaning later and getting the shed too dirty.
just a recap.
