View Full Version : Help me set up my laptop/gps!

G'day fellas,

I've recently picked up an Asus K50ie notebook and just won a bid for a BU-353 gps mouse. I already have an inverter, so I guess all I need now is software and the know-how to make it all work!

Is there a particular setup that most people are using? Can anyone make any suggestions?

Hi,
Oziexplorer is a good start for software if you have access to the maps you want to use.

Memorymaps is more expensive, but does come complete with maps of various scales for the State you are interested in to many times the value of what you paid for it.

I would rate Ozi better for some one who is prepared to learn it and get the most out of it.
I would rate Memorymaps more for some one who wants to plug and play.

You can download a free 10 day trial of Memory-Map and try before you buy.Need to have broadband though I think.
I tried it and love it for its simplicity,which is what I want,especially in the car.Doesn't have all the bells and whistles,but I would never use them anyway.And the maps are greatproviding you don't live in WA or SA:(

I'll throw in another vote for Ozi-explorer, I've been using it for over 10 years now. (Now with netbook and BT GPSr)
It's a buy once and then upgrades for life. Plenty of free maps around (legally free as well as the other type)

For maps try

Geoscience Australia (http://www.ga.gov.au/)

various state agencies also have maps

I like the sound of the Memory Map products. All I want to do is know where I am and be able to log routes. I checked the Memory Map website and there is no trial option. Perhaps there used to be but there certainly isn't now.

EDIT: nevermind. I found the link to the trial area on another forum. Giving it a go now.

Set up your laptop so you can close the lid without it closing down.

I have set mine up this way when on external power, it means you can close it up if you don't really need it for navigating but still want to log the trip.
