View Full Version : transmission brake drum

Has anyone got any tips for removing a transmission brake drum?

I have removed the nuts off the retaining bolts, the prop turns freely so not seized and there is no scraping noise indicating shoes are holding it.

I'm thinking there must be rust on the adjoining surfaces inside, but there is no 'push-off' screw hole like there is on the wheel brake drums.

Apart from 'heat and a big hammer', what else can I try?

Thanks

Try whacking it between the studs with the hammer (good idea to put the nuts back on whilst doing this),

Penetrating oil on the spigot, and a rubber mallet on the perimeter while rotating it. No screws holding the drum on are there?

Thanks fellas

Got it off today - lots of Penetrene and Thor number 2.

Full of gunk inside - maybe leak from transfer case.

Next thing is to get the shoes off, but need to clean up first so I can see what I'm doing - will have to wait til next weekend.

The whole reason for this was to get at the bolt heads for the prop shaft flange. The nuts are hard to get a spanner on and starting to burr. No room for a nut splitter so I'm hoping if I get the brake shoes off I can get a spanner onto the bolt heads and vice grip on the nuts.

The reason I want the prop shaft off is I need to take the engine and gearbox out, which looks like it's going to be the EASY part of the job.

I don't think that will help - the bolt heads are held captive by a ridge on the drive flange if I remember rightly!

The basic problem is almost certainly that the nuts are BSF, but have been mangled by using badly fitting metric or AF spanners on them.

You may end up having to split the nuts by drilling a row of holes followed by a chisel. even done on only one side this should loosen them enough to turn a half turn and repeat. Another alternative is to simply cut each bolt off with a sharp cold chisel, although this may result in some damage to the flange (which will probably only be cosmetic. A third alternative is to grind the nut off with a Dremel or similar.
