time to get your brains working.
let's see how many movies you can name that have landrovers in them.
try to get the movie name, not just the genre.
i'll get the ball rolling:
ace ventura- pet detective
tomb raider
the man with the golden gun
cliff hanger
the gods must be crazy.

Some disney movie about a giant gorilla in Africa had a heap of old landys including forward controls. As well as the Goodies episode where they were hunting wild Rolf Harris's from the back of a series 3.

In the movie "Tailor of Panama", Geoffrey Rush was driving a Discovery Series II.
In the movie "Don't say a Word", Michael Douglas was driving a Discovery Series II.
In the movie "Traffic", there was a dark blue Disco II parked in front of the house where the school kids were doing drugs.
In the movie "Bend it like Beckham" there was a Discovery in the carpark of Heathrow airport.
In "Volcano" Tommy Lee Jones casted partner (Jacqueline Kim) was driving a Disco I.
In "Stepmom", there was a Disco I which I think Julia Roberts was driving.
In the original "Tombraider", there were a bunch of black Discos parked on the side of the road where Angelina Jolie was riding her black Triumph to the auction.
The list goes on and on and on!

The most important one to know about is "The Gods must be Crazy".
The LR has a name (Beelzebub, I think) and a character of its own. For a significant part of the movie, the focus of attention is on the LR. Some of the funniest moments involve the LR. The scene at the gate with no dialogue surely rates up there with the very best silent movie comedy. Dare I suggest it almost steals the show?

As Ford spends more money on product placement than on good engineering it followed that Land Rovers started turning up in a lot of movies. I remember one recent one with Mike Douglas(Mr Zeta-Jones ;) ) and every time he came to a quick halt the tyres squealed even on the gravel :o :o maybe the ABS wasn't working :p

Series IIa - Ace Ventura, When Nature Calls. Classic parking maneuvre where he barrels though the bush then takes off on a jump and lands between two other cars... "like a glove!"

Clockwork Orange it was supposed to be set in the future so in one scene the police were driving Range Rovers as even back then they knew that the RR would not change much.
Also the TV series before Primeaval where they were collecting prehistoric animals from the past through a time curtain and they used Land Rovers. One group of scenes was filmed in America as well as England as the Land Rover changed from LHD to RHD

I just remembered Ewen MacGregor saying that he has a tricked up Defender when he was interviewed on Top Gear. He was seen driving this dark green or black Defender on "Long Way Down". had the licence plate EOM xxx.
There were some nice Series Landies in Hamish MacBeth.

Not quite true - It's an 88
The (visible) cars were all RHD and on the correct (Left) side of the road. They even tried hard to pick beaten-up "Australian" looking vehicles to scatter along the street. The giveaway that it was not actually shot here was the pine trees and slightly over abundant "Torquay" "Bells Beach" signs stuck up everywhere. It distinctly looks like the northern California or Oregon coastline (minus the driftwood - for those who are familiar with that region).

Blood Diamond, plenty Landies in there and the Aussie movie The Odd Angy Shot got a few Army 2As and some Acco shots, the gods must be crazy is without doubt the best, the bit where he has to bail out to close a gate while shes tottling off down the track at idle, there is grounds for a budding young writer to come up with a bloody funny movie with this sort of stuff

Wheels Across a Wilderness (Leyland Brothers late 1960's I think)
These I remember seeing at the theatre as a youngster an probably introduced me to the versatility of 4wd vehicles.
I would have to agree that the best was the previously mentioned 'The God's Must be Crazy.' It covered all areas of off road work - hill climbs, the gate, river crossings and I've got to have a winch like it had = fully automatic.

I've watched a few movies lately featuring Land Rovers.
The God's Must be Crazy - Say no more, it's the star of the show.
Cliffhanger - Sylvestor Stallone drives up in a nice Series 3 - only good bit of the movie
They're a Weird Mob - Which stars a very nice Series 1 107 (Just like Ol'ute!)
Can you think of any more good Land Rover movies?

In Quantum of Solace James Bond drove a Range Rover Sport whilst in Bolivia. In Casino Royale There were some Defenders in the African jungle as well as several Range Rovers in the car park of the country club James Bond visited in the Bahamas. The Living Daylights featured a British Army Land Rover in the opening sequence set on The Rock of Gibralter.
I seem to remember a number of black Range Rovers being used towards the end of Oceans 12 also, I think they were being driven by people posing as INTERPOL.

Watched that movie last night, I think it was that one, wasn't it annoying later in the movie when Bond and the girl are about to escape from that big plane by going out the back of it before it crashes. Our hero turns to the girl and shouts "Get in the Jeep "
It was a Land Rover.

This all started because I was watching "They're a Weird Mob" which has a couple of scenes with Ed Devareaux driving around in a lovely old Grey 107 just like mine. (Proabably not that old in 1966;))It features in a about 4 or 5 scenes and looked very appropriate in the 1966 Sydney scenes.
Searched in aulro for "Land Rover Movies" and got about 6 pages - should have narrowed my search huh? I don't visit other fora.
I end up watching movies just because of the Land Rovers:D (SWMBO hates that!)

Saw a documentary the other week on Shackleton's open boat journey and subsequent trek across South Georgia.
The TV crew started their re-enactment of the journey on the Falkland Isles, in Port Stanley. I have never seen so many Defenders in one place - In one segment, of 4 cars driving up a main road in the town, three of them were civilian Defenders! These cars were un-related to the filming, just people going about their daily routine.
The crew were in a Disco and there were parked Disco's and 'fenders everywhere. Landy heaven! I found myself saying "there's a Landy, there's another..." until my wife told me to shut up as I was spoiling the show. :D

She was known as "the antichrist" and has "BC" number plates. When Andrew Stayn left the winch running and the Landy climbed the tree... Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai!!!!!!!
I LOVE that movie!!!!!

today on GEM this war movie was shown where Frank Sinatra, Gina Lollobrigida, Steve McQueen & Charles Bronson almost by themselves won the Burma War !!!!!

How did we see it at night ? - the base lighting was very good I suppose

Tomorrow when the War Began: Land Rover is definitely the car the kids use to go for a weekend in Hell (which is a secret beauty-spot in the mountains). It's a 110, I think...

I saw it yesterday. I was thinking that if the movie started in 1971 when the landrover owning couple turned up, the series 3 looked very well worn for what would have been an almost new car. Plus I didn't think they had the burst proof doors with seperate locks that early on. I could be wrong though.

I saw it yesterday. I was thinking that if the movie started in 1971 when the landrover owning couple turned up, the series 3 looked very well worn for what would have been an almost new car. Plus I didn't think they had the burst proof doors with seperate locks that early on. I could be wrong though.
Great movie.
Saw the movie today, and I agree. Date specified as 1971, the Series 3 should have looked almost new (underneath the dust), especially when they first arrived in Dampier, and it did not. A 2a would have been more convincing. I did not notice the door locks, unfortunately. Also worth noting that in 1971, a new Series 3 probably would have had seat belts.
Worth seeing, as much for the depiction of the area and times as for the story.

The Bowler Wildcat (Defender heritage somewhere in there?) was shown in the final episode of season 17 of Top Gear this week. Have a look on Youtube as someone may have uploaded just this section.
It was a story about a few former British soldiers who happen to be amputees and the challenge they are embarking upon to do the 2012 Dakar Rally. It's worth watching IMO.

I know i'm dredging up an old one here, but does anyone know where I can get a copy of this film? Haven't seen it in years, and I was trying to tell my kids how good it was, but I would love to show them...

In the 1950's Charles Chauvel did a documentary called Australian Walkabout featuring two Series Land Rovers and what looks like an FJ Panel Van. Two clips from this series are available from the National Film Archive:
Australian Walkabout (1958) on ASO - Australia's audio and visual heritage online (http://aso.gov.au/titles/tv/australian-walkabout/)
It was a 13 part series done for the BBC and ABC. Does anyone know if its availble on video of any format?

I've only watched it seven or eight times, my Grandparents had it and as kids we always begged to watch it...maybe that's where the love of Series came from although it's not exactly the best advertisment for them.
Driving from Vic up to Sydney at the start of the year with no handbrake and having to start the engine by opening the bonnet and shorting the starter out (Solenoid not working) reminded me of this film...stalling at traffic lights on a hill proved interesting too :o
And there's a third one? If you could call it by the same name...
