So I was driving my Series 2 - dropping my brother off to the railway station - and the front left-hand wheel momentarily locked up as I was pulling away from the lights. Noisy, smoky and a bit startling, but no serious consequences.

Now, she's making a distinct cheeping sound from that area, the frequency of which seems directly related to road speed

We're dropping her off to Anthony (of British 4WD Imports) today ... hopefully it's nothing too serious ...

G'day All, Say G'day to AJ for me, my first thoughts would be a brake shoe dragging, possibly caused by sticking wheel cylinder or a collapsed brake hose, either way AJ will find the cause cheers Dennis:angel:

Possibly more likely than a brake issue is a wheel bearing on the way out. Not a major issue unless it damages the stub axle, but even then not all that major.

If free wheel hubs are fitted, could be that.

It occurs to me that you may be referring to a Discovery 2 not a Series 2. In that case it is almost certainly a wheel bearing, will not be cheap, and indicates the other three need looking at.

She's definitely a Series 2 ... not many Discos with cloth tops, four-speed gearboxes & fold-down windscreens ;)

Anthony just called. The seizure was due to the breaks (which he's fixed, as well as fitting new bearings) but he hasn't been able to track down the cause of the squeaking noise.

He also fitted some better mirrors, which will be appreciated in Melbourne traffic :D
