View Full Version : My series 1 Snowy

ERASER

Ive been wanting a series 1 for a long while now. I really wanted one that had some form of history attached to it as well. Ended up picking this one up. Its a ex snowy mountains scheme vehicle. Needs a complete resto, hopefully ill be able to handle it. Plan on stripping it down to a chassis and starting from there slowly rebuilding piece by piece. The holden 6 that's in it will be turfed out and an original motor put back in. I plan on restoring it back to the way it was in 1957.
As it sits atm

Hi there

Thanks for shariing - and looking forwards to the rebuild.

It looks quite good for its age, is there much rust?

All the best

Congratulations Eraser - great project

I started mine about a year ago - similar plan to yours.

Lyallthecrocodile started later but has just overtaken me.

Scallops has just finished. Chris is starting another one.

There are lots of projects underway at all different stages so share lots of pics as you go and someone will have the answer to just about any question you may have (or at least be sympathetic if they don't).

Cheers

Thanks for sharing. This forum is a great resource, good luck with the unholdening process, looks like you have an interesting front crossmember there, I've just finished reconstructing mine from where some one cut it down with an oxy to make the Holden engine fit.

I think most people will finish their rebuilds before me lol.. Im in no hurry to finish. Now that i have the car ill slowly start collecting all the peices i need then later on ill start. Rust wise there isn't much at all. Theres a little bit on top of the passenger side dash below the windscreen and a small bubble on the drivers side in the same spot. Not much at all really for a car that old thats been in the weather all its life. When i do eventually pull it apart ill be getting the firewall reparied and im thinking of getting it galvaised as well? Ill definatly be getting the chassis galvanised when the time comes. Chassis wise its pretty good. Its rust free. The front cross member needs to be replaced as the original one has been butchered/removed to fit the holden 6. A good replacment front cross member came with it. Shouldnt be to hard to fit that. Ill also need to replace the gearbox member as its had a hard life and is battered and bruised.
So far all ive done is sprayed a couple of litres on lanolin over everything to give it some protection and hopefully start penetrating the nuts and bolts so they come out later when i want them to.

What are peoples thoughts on the colour of the interior? Could it have been red?

The fire engines had the poppy red seat, and the drivers seat back looks original - but I suspect they 3/4 seat back is not original.

The 3/4 seat looks like the originals from a 107 wagon.

They only started using the 20 Series and the FJ 35 (butterbox) station wagon after 1958 a decade since Land Rover started working on the scheme. The 20 series only had hi range until the 40 series came onto the project sometime after 1960 and they continued with only a three speed box until the mid 1970's.

The SMHEC/SMHEA used Land Rovers right through to the 1970's when the construction phase of the scheme was officially complete.

I wasn't sure, the Snowy Scheme Museum at Adaminaby was originally sponsored by Toyota and one of their original conditions was that there were to be no Land Rovers depicted in the collection, basically Toyota were denying the first decade of the scheme. The sponsorship has now lapsed and last time I spoke to the curators of the museum they were looking for a Land Rover that had been on the scheme.

Havent been on here for a while. Havent started on Snowy yet has ive been busy modifing and getting my hilux engineered over the past few months. Ive finally finished doing that and have cleared/sold all the hilux left overs so now have room to start the resto.
Holden 6 will be coming out of snowy in the next couple of weeks, them im sending the firewall off to get restored. No great rush to get it finished but atleast itll be a start. Once i actually start doing something ill update this thread with pics.

Reminds me of the great hullabaloo over that TV advert where Toyota claimed they had " built the snowy scheme"

The ad was pulled after the ABC exposed the fraud on one of those great shows they have .

I believe they already a Land Rover - as they have a series II Firefly Fire Engine.

Its still fun shutting down the occasional Toyota owner who trys that line on.
