g'day all
i have got a 2000 hse rangie
the problem i have is this
when im driving at around 100kph-120kph and back off and let it coast i get a whining sound from the rear diff area,it seems not to make this noise up unt around 90 at least,and only when i back off,what could this possibly be,i have only just bought this vehicle and have to take it back to a dealer for a couple of minor fixes but was gonna see what was going on with the rear end also,while im there.
any help would be great

Check the oil in the diff and look for the usual signs of wear... lots of metal filings.

The inspection/fill plug is just a 1/2" drive from memory. Stick your finger in the hole and if you don't feel wet stuff, top it up with diff oil until it leaks out of the hole.

Other culprit could be the universal joints on the rear prop-shaft, maybe even the front. At speed it is sometimes hard to tell where the noise is really coming from. Crawl under the car and give them a good shake. Shouldn't be much, if any, movement in the shafts. If it clunks, you got a problem.

Are you sure it's the rear diff? Roll the rear seats forward, take off the wheel well cover and remove the spare tyre and place it and the cover forward of the wheel well. go for a drive ... all sound from the rear will be magnified and you'll have a better idea 'from whence it came" :eek:;)
