ABS Pump Replacement

Hi All,

The ABS pump in my P38 died on the way home Monday night........I thought it smelt expensive!!

The part number(s) seem to be ANR2242 or STC2783

I'm looking at purchasing a good secondhand unit.......if possible has anyone got any advice of where to get one in Australia, that actually have one in stock? I'm in Melbourne....Nunawading. I've started the ring around, but so far no luck unless I want to spend $1200 on a secondhand unit (changeover).
Looking on eBay, they are readily available from overseas....a brand new vacuum sealed unit with accumulator is (only) around $1400 with delivery (then GST etc with customs). Second hand units seem to be priced around AU$400-$500 mark.

It looks like the rotor is fried in my unit......powering the motor with 12V directly, and nothing happens. There is the smell of rolled up $100 bills coming from the motor. The relay is working OK, and not welded closed. Once I get this sorted I will order a replacement rotor from the company in California that sells parts for these units (US$70), and keep this as a backup.

I've already got a brand new accumulator, and have replaced the plastic washers and seals etc in the modulator (from Russell) while the system was opened...also have 8 litres of fluid on standby for a full bleed. Just need to find a pump....son_of_bundalene dosen't have an ebay store anymore :(

Any pointers, help or advice gratefully received.

No, It's not an omen........

I did the ABS Modulator (BMR) refurb AFTER the ABS pump died. I've had the kit from Russell for about a year, and a spare ABS modulator.....I was just waiting for inspiration.......or should I say the necessity of actually getting around to do the job. I probably should have changed the accumulator a year ago when the brakes didn't hold full pressure after sitting for a few days.........I was not looking forward to doing a full bleed on the system, which was why I had put both these jobs off.......I guess now I pay the price, and also learn a thing or 2 I didn't know before.

Let me make this clear, so there is no misunderstandings:

The ABS pump failure occured before I did the BMR overhaul.

The pump could have failed at any time, for a variety of reasons on a P38 this age........it's all part of the fun of ownership......as we all know. :p

Having done the dreaded bleed a couple of times now: a total bleed should not take much more than 2 standard containers of brake fluid. As a rough guide there's less than 250ml in the lines, 200ml for the calipers and a 300 cc for the reservoir... the accumulator takes less than 0.5ml to charge prior to installing...hope this helps

Sorry mate i couldnt help. Mabe ask a few mechanics if they have a dead one, with a good motor and stuffed pump. I think it was also very similar on late classic rangies too - looks the same to me anyway.

I'd ask - Russel, Justin C, Bruce davis, Graeme cooper, TR spares (sydney), Land vehicle spares, All 4x4 Kotara.

I bought a secondhand replacement pump with accumulator from the USA for about A$160 delivered.

If you do get another, don't throw out the old pump. The switch is useful as it cannot be purchased separately.

I have my old pump which works but it has a dead switch. I'm keeping the pump as a spare.

Got a secondhand pump locally yesterday for $650.......just finished a second bleed, and it's all up and running now. I'll rebuild the motor when I get a chance and keep it for a spare.
