G'day everyone,

td5 deefer with 170k.

Was driving along at around 90km/h when I hear a low bang and then lose around 50% of the normal power.

The 130 still runs but it doesn't sound as "healthy" as it was before the incident.

I searched and thought about the fuel pump but their wouldn't of been a noise if it was the fuel pump would there?

If it makes any difference- the 130 has also had a new computer from davis (DPL), intercooler, clutch, egr, AFM etc. etc. about 3 weeks ago.

Thanks in advance.

Split turbo hose? I had one go under a clip which made it a little difficult to find.

Check your turbo/intercooler hoses. Are you getting a whistling/ hissing noise?

Good thinking. Thanks guys. The turbo wasn't sounding as it should however I put it down to the loss of power.

I better go get dressed now before i go outside!.

okay, looked at the turbo hose trying hard to find that to be the issue as it would of been a nice easy replacement but then on further inspection yes, it was an intercooler hose which has popped off.

Having no idea what I should be finding- what I found was heaps of oil in the vicinity and nothing else. Is this fine?

Apart from placing the hose back on do I need to do anything else and would of their been a reason the hose came off in the first place which needs addressing?

... so,

is there oil in the intercooler ?

and is it more than just a non-runny surface layer ?

They often pop off, we are alway's getting td5's into work with low power, nearly alway's turns out to be the turbo/intercooler hose, most common one is the big one on the drivers side of the engine.
Most the time they have oil in the hose, there not meant to, but i wouldn't be to worried unless it has alot.

CHEERS TIM.

Let's go with "surface layer" As I'm not worrying about this today. It isn't running any where or anything like that. But, I take your point that it will be something I have to start thinking about.

You will get some oil in the intercooler as the engine breather is plumbed into the intake system. Small amounts are normal, large amounts could be a concern.

Thanks Bigjon, some concern eased.

Is it just a matter of putting the hose back on in its right position and driving or is their more I need to be doing?

Maybe the hose clamp was not tightened sufficiently or overlooked when you had the work done recently. Has power returned to normal after refitting hose/clamp?

happened to me too on the disco... i thought i had blown a tyre as i was giving it a huge bootful! so it went with a massive bang... yes just tighten it up nicely.. also maybe make sure pipe and mounting point are clean of oil to stop it slipping off again...

regarding oil.. i recently replaced the pipes on the disco and deefer and both had a nice layer of oil inside... and in the low spots there were some very small pools of oil (i'm assuming collected from sitting overnight) i am considering proventing them both (see the thread) as this rips all oil out of the breather and makes things a little cleaner...

Thanks

Steve
