View Full Version : Handbrake heat

Just did a trip to Fraser Island towing the camper. The Defender 130 did it comfortably but I noticed a few things and wondering how normal these are:

(1) the handbrake got so hot I couldn't touch it.......prior to leaving the handbrake drum was replaced due to a grating sound I was noticing and am thinking it is something to do with this as I noticed the grating sound again....but infrequently (only happened every few hundred kms)

(2) the drivetrain/gearbox seems to be noisy and sloppy.....in situations when you would be accelerating then coasting/idling down hill a very audible single knock would occur.......this occurs if you don't get the timing right on gear change throughout the range

(3) drivetrain clattering (tappet like sound)......when the deefy was above 100kph and in particular on those 110 zones up north going uphill I noticed the engine making a considerably louder clattering noise....sort of like tappets.....am thinking this is just the engine working harder in that particular gear because as soon as I down shifted noise went.......this would only occur in 5th and 6th gear.

Any help here would be great
Cheers Stace

Habndbrake is dragging. This may be either because it is adjusted too tight, the expander or anchor is sticking, or it is contaminated, probably from leaking oil for the rear seal.

This is the cause of all the symptoms described.

Hmm, what about the output flange being loose? Would explain slop, noise etc( although there are MANYexplanations for this)
May be worthwhile dropping the shaft and getting out the long extension bar.
