just to clarify, the short roof rail kit is need for the expedition rack?

On an RRS, it is possible to have the rack mounted directly to the mount points, but it is more difficult to remove it when required - but I don't believe the D3/D4 is the same. Check posts by Admiral, he mounted one recently.

The D3/4 & Sport it IS recommended that the short roof rail kit be fitted.
I have seen a couple fitted without the roof rail kit, it does sit lower to the roof & is a pain (from the owner himself) to remove when required.

I would assume so, on the Discovery as you would not need the long feet (at the front) to step down onto the roof as u have the rail already there.
