I often think of my 110 as Rocinante ..... but I haven't had the hide to seize the name and paint the name on it, as it could equally apply to any of our older cars.
It is a name with deeper meaning... to quote from Wikipedia
Rocín in Spanish means work-horse or low-quality horse ("nag"), but also illiterate or rough man. There are similar words in French (roussin; rosse), Portuguese (rocim) and Italian (ronzino). The etymology is uncertain. The name is, however, a pun. On the first order, the Spanish ante means "before" or "previously". On the second order, it also translates as 'in front of'. On the third order, the suffix -ante in Spanish is adverbial; rocinante refers to functioning as, or being, a rocín reflexively. As such, Cervantes establishes a pattern of ambiguous interpretations present in many words in the novel. Another further explanation comes from the text itself: nombre a su parecer alto, sonoro y significativo de lo que había sido cuando fue rocín, antes de lo que ahora era - "a name, to his thinking, lofty, sonorous, and significant of his condition as a hack before he became what he now was" (the gender of Rocinante is not actually specified).
and it was also the name of Monsignor Quixote's old car in Graham Green's novel of the same name
so from de Cervantes to Steinbeck & Greene - a name from literature that could grace any friendly old LR
maybe our members with Spanish backgrounds can fill in more details

I'm of the belief that they have to earn their names.
First Series 2 didn't get around to earning it's name, the 2door RRC was Gumby since it was green and had excessive flex/body roll. Still waiting to take the Disco out to let iot earn it's name.

I first started out thinking my little girl should be called 'Lady Godiver' because of my wife's English heritage. That was until swmbo was complaining about how much time I spent with this other women and that I treated her better, now she is refered to as 'The Mistress'.

First was Eileen after the song come on Eileen which seemed to bring the truck good traction as we always played the song as we bashed through the mud in Africa.
The guys we traveled with had a old series one which was very slow and as they were English and slightly mad (nicely) they christened her "mistress Quickly"
The new truck has not earned a name as such yet

18th November 2010, 06:23 PM
Hi all,
My Defender 2007 Puma is name Taipan, as there are several reasons;
1. Taipan is Chinese for "supreme leader". Which Defenders are in 4WDs.
2. Australia's inland Taipan snake is the world's deadliest snake. And my Taipan defender shares the same habitat (Australia Outback).
3. And finally Taipans are black and grow to around 100-110 inches.
Tikirocker
18th November 2010, 07:10 PM
The name of my truck carried over from when I had the Series IIA ... long story short I have a thing for Polynesian carvings of Tiki's which are the Polynesian equivalent of Adam in the Biblical sense. Tiki was the first man in Polynesian lore ... I also have a habit of carving large Tiki out of wood and selling them from time to time.
So ... I have a small carved wooden Tiki that is an Easter Island Moai that would hang from my rear view mirror and when I was driving my Land Rover it would rock from side to side ... hence Tiki-Rocker. There is another layer to the whole meaning in that I love Rockabilly music and Kustom Kulture and Tiki's are a big part of that sub culture also. In that context Rocker means Rockabilly ... so there is Tikirocker there as well.
So the truck is called Tikirocker and I've been using this handle as an online name since year dot. :)

As already noted. Iv`e a feeling Iv`e seen a thread like this before. Any way as I might have already posted. My ute was named by the wife George. This does show our age a bit. You have to hark back to the Bug`s Bunny cartoons. In series of Bugs cartoons Bug would meet a giant Yeti or a giant martin monster. The monster would grab bugs and say I will call you George, I will squeeze you, I will hold you etc. Missus thinks I`m a bit like the yeti ( a tad thick and feral ) so the ute was called George.

Interesting but cool question!
My TJ Jeep's name is Eddy (After Eddy The Eagle). It's a Golden Eagle edition, n was named after the crap down-hill skiier Eddy The Eagle...it kinda just stuck after I first saw it in the dealership lot, n thought it was handicapped through old technology, but still pulled looks. I bought it new for a song as that was a sister dealership, n love the beast to bits! Hehehe!
My old BMW (1996 316i Compact) was called "The Reichstag" or "Panzer" because of all the German mods on it. I regret selling that car to this day tbh...it was an awesome run-around which could play damned hard.
As for my D1, I'm still yet to settle on a name other than Landy atm. I call it the Disco (as was the nick-name for mums one I learnt to drive in, n that feels right to me), but mates have called it War Pig, the Beast, Toorak Tractor on Steroids, Roundabout-Blocker, ******, or Toyota Recovery Rig...
I'm happy with Disco tbh...the old joke with mum n I had about her old Discovery is "Dis Co Very" Well In The Driveway or Wherever You Can Push The Limit". Kudos to my mum for encouraging me n my mates to brutalise that kind of new 4x4 back in the day, in a controlled environment!
Sentimental value of flogging the arse outta mum's 1993 V8 Rossignol at max revs with the stereo pumped, the rig loaded with mates, around many hectares on my great-uncles farm at 15yo, is frankly priceless!
Back then, but putting it into todays context with inflation, it was the equivalent of unleashing a new $70k V8 weapon in the hands of 5 teenagers, unsupervised in paddocks...guessing that sounds risky?! Hehehe! That's how we learned to drive n try 4x4'ing early on.
In essence, my rig is "The Landy".

I call it the EH, short for "Event Horizon".. which is a more upmarket and polite way of saying 'Black Hole'.
Well, not quite if you want to be pedantic, but whatever approaches a black hole passes through this distance... after which it appears invisible to a distant observer though in fact it still exists (until its crushed into almost nothingness inside the Black Hole)
- Its a wonderful description of the fate of "money" when it gets close to the car.... so far I've spent over 20% of the purchase price on fixes and replacements, barely six weeks after buying it!
But it IS nice to drive.....

depends on mood - SWMBO calls it my mistress
When I'm modifying it or repairing something I've broken through playing then I cant repeat what I call it, sufficient to say not complimentary. As usually I've barked myself and bleeding - not her fault but I blame her anyway
When it's running sweet - my baby
Like Ace usually it's just called the Disco
But the more I modify it the more the term 'The Toy' is bandied about

our yellow 'fender is known by all who know us as 'Greg'...
Simply because it's yellow, and when we bought it our daughter was in the middle of her Wiggles phase. So Greg it was. (Luckily this was before Sam became the yellow Wiggle!)

The D3 is the "Queen Mary" because it is a luxury boat.
The first Game became "Clancy" as it fitted with Clancy of the Overflow (seals at the top of the tank were stuffed and if you overfilled you got petrol on your shoes) and Clancy was a Drover (a LanDrover).
The second Game then had to keep in style and became "Banjo" from Banjo Paterson who, as you should all know, wrote The Man from Snowy River and other poems that feature Clancy of the Overflow.
The 53 80" went a little out of character since it is small and greeny brown and "Gumnut" just seemed to fit.
The 55 86" has become "Bartie" because that was what Banjo Paterson was called by his family (full name is Andrew Barton Paterson).
Then of course there is the Pinzgauer which had to be "Arnie" since he is made in Austria and has some muscles.
Everything that matters seems to have a name :).

From first to last there is my old 84 RRC named GRUMPY we named her this as before i rebuilt the carby she was a hard starter and often backfired and didnt like to run till she had warmed up a bit .
Then along come an old ruff as guts 60 series aptly named G banger as she was a banged up POS with a shiny gold G on the front guards .
Then the disco was purchased and never named tho it was called plenty of names before it met its maker .
Then came the current RRC painted matt black so we named her betty AKA black betty .
The newest addition is my 84 135'' crew cab county we named her FERGIE as she has the creature comforts of an old tractor and sounds just like one also with the isuzu .

I've never owned a Land Rover, or any car to be honest.
But if I would pull off my dream, getting Defender for a long haul to Africa, Asia or both, I would give it the name Pajo.
Pajo was the name of the dog my father had as a child. It saved his and his parents lives by waking them up at night when a fire started in their house. The house burned down to the ground. If it wouldn't have been for that dog I wouldn't be here, so I think it would be a suiting name to give the car as it would be something I would have to rely on if I would make that long trip.

Here is my list of names and reasons...
The Land Rovers:
Oscar (84 RRC) No real reason...
Grover (98 300Tdi Disco) Keeping in theme with the first one...
Grouch (74 S3 SWB Hardtop) Both keeping in theme and due to its old rough characteristics...
Skippy (64 SWB Diesel) Those who have driven a shorty would understand!
Rambo (64 109 Workshop Office) Due to its military Background...
The Others:
Toby (Pinzgauer 710M) Decided the vehicle was tough enough and didn't need a tough name to prove itself :p
Grommet (Haflinger) If you have seen one you would understand :p
Busta (89 Sierra) It is my free bush basher... so its fairly busted up...
Danny (Its a Mercedes Vito) Surely you guys get this one?! :D
I have also been known to name all the other cars in my family but we will leave it at that :)

Wifey is slowly attaching herself to the Disco, she say's she hates driving it because its big and turns too slow, but doesn't hesitate to take it for a spin to the shops or to work if im at home ... My daughter loves it when we run through puddles and cross creeks and is constantly on the look out for something to drive over, through or across :D
I'm smitten with my Disco, Im now a Landy tragic and will never own any other 4B but a Landy ... my wife and daughter love the truck and always want me to take them to go get muddy.
We are talking about doing a trip up to the Cape in 2012, I couldn't think of any better way to get there :)

Mine has a few names.
The little kidlets next door call it Defendatruckasaurus
The missus calls it The Lurv Bus
I call it Armie, which was my pops nickname and he always wore a shirt almost the same green as my fender.
If its giving me trouble it gets called Rotten Sod after its plates SOD

The disco goes by a couple of alias
The Black Beast (Obvious really)
Black Bits (to go with the boat she pulls - "Pink Bits")
Da Truck (especially when compared to the rest of the cars. X-Trail & Hyundai Excel)
Or just simply - His.

well my first was a series 2a,originally green ,but after a rebuild/model,it came out bright white, and since it had a slight body roll/wallow it was promptlly called Moby (as in the whale)
Secondly came Thumper the 86 rangie, had a nice exhuast note that sounded like thump thump thump, hence the name
current daily drive (nissa navara),doesnt quite have one name but a few,I like to call it the Datto, but it gets bluey, the ute or simply the nissan, or the nav

Our D2 goes by "The Canyonero",
Actually... It's Canyonero II, Canyonero I was spirited away by our insurance co after a discussion with a creek ended in the creek's favour! :-/ the kids like Canyonero II better anyway. Better colour (silver) and more USB sockets in the back.
I recently claimed my Dad's Series I named "Grover". The name tape has been on the dash since the mid 70's so I guess "Grover" sticks. :-) It is blue(ish) I guess!

My series 3 is called Princess Fiona, but most of the times just Fiona. Reason: She is green and a little rough like Shrek :)
My Jeep Wrangler is called Frank the Tank, but most of the times just Frank.

Our trucks seem to get a name as soon as they arrive. However the name doesn't necessarily become common use.
The D4 is 'Ernie' the fastest milkcart in the west. No particular reason, or logic ( the girls in the family came up with it )

My TD5 dual cab is called Rattle-n-Hum cause that's what it does and I also liked the U2 Rattle -n-hum album.
My series 1 was named the Bullfrog by the previous owner and the name has stuck.

I used to own a big red 110 County, affectionately dubbed "The Killer Tomato". We changed the name after I accidentally submerged it in the Boyne River. It became "The Red October".
After that I had a blue 110, which I always seemed to be arguing with. It became known as "The Big Blue".

Call me old fashioned if you like.
I call the D1 ...'The D1'
The D2a for short ...'The D2'
and the D3 ...'The D3'
Occassionally I call them other names but the censor function on this website wouldn't allow me to tell you what they are...

Our recently-acquired 2003 D2 TD5 is called Barney (unlike my mis-typed user name), after the previous owner, who's name is in the service book.
Barney is not to be confused with the similarly-named Barney Rubble from the Flintstones. Barney is certainly no rubble, and the TD5 has enough puff not to require any footwork from the driver :)

The fella that I bought my Defender off told me that he named it "larry" the Landrover.
Since its been in my possesion I have been contemplating calling it "Bender" the Defender.

I have "DeeDee" as my "Daily Driver" S2a. (Although I can't drive it at the moment due to my leg brace preventing my knee from bending enough to make it to the brake pedal. Do S2a's build up enough speed to require use of the brake pedal??)
Then there's "the donor" that will over time become many separated parts and will be renamed "the parts bin" when dismantled and stored in the "yet to be built" shed.
I don't yet have a name for the S1 as it needs to develop a character. I guess once I start work on the restoration it will naturally "find" a name one day. Until then it's just "the S1" (or the "old one" if talking to my wife because she gives me a blank look when I say "the S1" despite me only having one S1 and two S2a's. Go figure!)
Cheers

The Tardis
When asked what colour my defender was I replied "tardis blue"
My 4 year old daughter got hold of it and the name "the Tardis" has stuck.........the fact that it is british and square helped.
In a similar vein, my two Dr Who obsesses boys named our keswick green defender The Brigadier after the Doctor's friend who frequently drove series Landrovers.

Cube II as it's the 2nd Defender 90, first was stolen in less than 1 year of ownership...
Nicknamed "the cube-car" by a friend 11 years ago, the name stuck and became simply "the Cube".
Now being truck cab, I made a new sticker: "The Cube II - Ute"

Theres a bit of conflict re the name of our Rangie, My wife calls her Ellie which has something to do with Gone in 60 seconds (I dunno why either) and because she is silver grey and has big ears...........
A mate who went for a cheer up hoon through the Gembrook state forest one wet rainy day remarked that my activities were ****** Mental and still calls the Rangie the "mental machine", something to do with 4 wheel drifts on wet clay and getting on 2 wheels trying a Scan flick. Silly I know but we laughed like maniacs for weeks just remembering the madness. Anyway I have referred to her as Princess Mental, something to do with being all pretty and then thrashing about in the mud.
Im inclined to call her Sera Pax because she is so slow and if I could think of a zombie name id use that too because she keeps rising from the dead.
Sadly, My wife can and will hurt me while I sleep so for the record her name is Princess Mental Ellie Queen of the Zombies.
Or The Rangie.
Tony
And heres a pic of her doing what she was born to do.

My son reckons we should call our 76 109 'the antichrist' after the landrover in 'The Gods Must Be Crazy'.
I am stuck between 'Millie' after my wife, or 'Gloria' after the hippo in the kids flick 'Madagascar'.
mmm....decision must be made soon.

Our 1985 Green Isuzu County was named ' Greenpeas ' by the prev owner as a play on words I think , as it is possibly not the most environmentally friendly vehicle around:o
We thought about renaming it ' Theresa ' as in Teresa ( trees are) Green and the Green meanie ( which was really the Blue meanie from the Beatles theme)
I think Greenpeas has stuck though :)

There was a global name register for Land Rovers in www.landrovernames.com (http://www.landrovernames.com)
But at the moment it seems no to be working.
Our 1998 Disco's name is "Abolladita" (dented all around )
Because of her dents collection, all of them bringing us remembrance from beautifull places.
