How easy is it to pick up a 3.9V8 (or 4.0) and Auto box in Australia?
Thinking about fitting a V8 and Auto to my 90. I was looking at LS engines but a 3.9 and Auto would probably be easier (know nothing about Auto boxes or the wiring needed).

How set are you on the idea of a V8. An auto from a disco bolts straight up to the 300Tdi engine (assuming thats what you have). A smicko conversion by M.R. costs around $6k I think - if you are handy with spanners and found a cheapish disco to salvage the parts from you might get away with it a fair bit cheaper.

Want a V8 purely for the noise. I was looking to fit it all myself only have those bits done that need to be engineered (eg engine mounts). I feel capable enough of fitting it all and if it all comes as one piece then I don't have to fit the Auto box seperately. I have fitted manual gearboxes before but never fitted an Auto. So, it should be a bit of a learning curve for me.
BTW sent you a PM about the Air filter rubbers.

Don't forget when thinking about V8/ZF auto combinations that the Disco 1 /Classic 3.9 litre RV8's have hydraulic ZF's simplier ECU (14CUX) and the D2/Rangies 4 litre RV8's have electronic ZF's and more complex ECU plus seperate auto controller. A Compushift can be used to control the electronic ZF but not cheap (the MR conversion Vlad mentioned).

Never has a better argument been made ! :D

OK looks like it's going to be a 3.9V8 and Auto from a Disco. Just need to find a broken one.

The 3.9 V8 and ZF box out of a Disco1 in a 110 SW is my idea of a perfect Land Rover.
Keep this thread updated or post a cross-link if you start your conversion.

Other options are the 4.6 V8 from the P38 but with the 14CUX injection system and the Thor inlet manifolds.

P38s are cheap in South Africa as most mechanics hate the electronic gremlins and the owner just simply give up on them.

This is going into a Defender 90 not a 110. So it should be really nice.
