View Full Version : Air cleaner - how is it mounted?

I've found the cause of one of the many rattles under my bonnet.

Firstly re the air cleaner. It seems as if it is (supposed to be) fixed to the spring base by 4 small nuts and bolts. The front ones seem fine, but I can lift the rear (firewall end) up and down significantly.

However when I grasp the bolt underneath it doesn;t move ! Nor is the top part moving. Maybe the bolt (on both sides) is broken in two ?

If anyone can shed light on what I should be looking for I;d be grateful.

It;s pretty cramped in tthere and hard to see what's actually going on.

Mine's mounted on rubber mounts (4 of them) with 6mm threads each end, when I got my deefer 2 of them were broken and for years I held it down with cable ties, simple and relatively inexpensive to buy them and fix it properly, should have done it properly first time. (bought them at an engineering supply shop)
Edit, just checked they're actually 8mm thread bobbin type mounts, with nyloc nuts, not sure if I drilled the holes from 6mm to 8mm as it was a year or 2 ago.

2stroke is right. The air filter casing is generally held in place by two metal straps. These straps are mounted on a frame that is bolted on using four rubber mounts. Vibration over time shakes the rubber to pieces. The temporary fix is to use a couple of substantial cable ties. If two of your mounts have broken, try a cable tie at that end of the filter case. It'll probably cure the rattle. I'd suggest planning to replace all four as you'll likely find the two remaining mounts show signs of distress. I replaced mine after about 10 years hard work. Five years later they are still good - at least they were when I last checked!
