Hey Simon,

Good to have a spot just for traybacks or as we call them here in NZ, flatdecks.

Mine from a year or so ago. A few subtle changes since - black disco rims and 235/85 bighorn tyres, mid-mounted winch under the front of the flatdeck and a few bar changes. Lost the camera so no latest snaps...

When I first got the truck a few years ago - it's a 1984 110. Since been a few changes and many good trips out and about.

The flatdeck like you won't normally see...

Ice was falling off the tower this day... great things about the single cab - the heater doen't need to heat much to be effective... :D

Firewood trip - black wattle from the flood plains.

Thanks for posting up mate ... great looking truck. Is that a home made Snorkel also?
Simon.

20th November 2010, 08:57 PM
Hey Simon,

yes, the snorkel is out of 3 inch exhaust tube mig'ed up from mandrel bends capped with a safari cap. Hot dipped to stop the rot from setting in. Too many river crossings to be without it.

Your truck is a beaut too. Good to see the custom cut 'n tuck. There've been many times I think a double cab would be great to own. Many times also I am glad it is just wife and I can fit in the single cab. :D

Cheers,

Wow ... some really great set ups being shown here, keep em coming! My plan is to get a custom rag top made for the tray on the County, get some hoops made up so we can kip in the back when touring. Plan will be to make the tray an informal camper for swag/sleeping bags and use the back seat area of the dual cab for fridge and lock up storage.

I have just bought this 1999 td5 130. I haven't seen it yet (in person) - pick up this friday.
I'm very nervous - never spent that much money without eye-balling something before, but it has only done 24,000km - and hopefully has spent a lot of time in the shed!

I saw that one in just trucks and thought it would be a good buy. Is it an ex nsw RFS truck or CFA??
The aviation support group at Gosford had one to provide quick reaction helicopter support with two 44's of jet A1 on the back.

Just recently got given a camera by the wife for our anniversary so I can now post some pics of the truck as this morning...

In the play zone... fishing & swimming area. Water temp was at a nice fresh 16 deg C this morning and I sighted two large trout but they were not taking anything I had in the lure box... fish for another day.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/12/1243.jpg

Doing what it does do well... approx 500kg of hardwood (Kanuka) pulled from the river and destined for the winter firewood stack... polyair airbags were at 22psi. Winch is currently mid-mounted but only goes out the rear but the plans are laid for the rope to be accessible out both ends... 235/85/16 Bighorns on unaltered disco rims. Plain basic honest old truck.

My Dec 01 130 with Obieco tray, bull bar and warn winch. The only other changes are old man emu shocks all round. Will probably sell it in about 12 months time to get a new one hopefully. The best farm truck you can buy, will carry a good load and with full time 4x4 you have traction all the time. As a farmer I drive off road every day. Visitors in cruisers have to get out and put their hubs in when its wet and real pain if you are already stuck.

Do you know if that tray was an original fitting on your Defender?
It appears to be identical to mine, but I had always wondered if my tray had been on another vehicle. There were painted and unpainted bit in the supports underneath that suggested it had been on a different vehicle and I could rub the tyres on the ribs under the tray when the axles were all crossed up. Does yours do that? I suppose that has more to do with the supporting cross rails than the tray.

looks like original fitted triple m tray,I'm second owner -had it for 3 years, sold new from Casino in '96, 94my, 95 compliance (dealership now gone). Front mount has bit of flat bar welded between uprights that's not painted rest of mounts made from angle with bit cut outa rear to allow spare to fit up under tray- look like a standard fitting kit. Got different rear bump stops and sway bar which limits travel a bit, bump stops touch diff when I got 1t on and ute sits level, they will still allow some more upward movement as they compress-someone mentioned they're off a tojo

Those two rails that run the length of the tray must be a lot wider apart than mine. I have only 600mm between the rails and the tyre is something like 780mm diameter.
I have about 175mm between the underside of the tray and those mount beside the fuel tank that the filter attaches to.
I am reluctant to raise the tray because it will raise the CG of the camper and will make it just that much harder to reach up to tuck the canvas in as the camper is folded up. I might just have to leave the spare bolted to the headboard. :(
Those rope boxes look neat. Did you bolt them up under the tray or are they supported in some other way?

I bought my Defender new in 2003. I didn't want the crappy alluminium tray I was offered as I wanted to build my own from steel and get the whole lot galvanized. I took it just as a cab chassis unregistered and the dealer gave me a month to put the tray on it and return it so they could register it for me. the floor of the tray in a previous life was three HQ Holden panel van floors. It gave my a lighter gauge steel with the advantage of pressed ribs for greater strength. The drawer under the back has a hidden lock behind the number plate which also is on a HQ number plate hinge. The hood bows are all removable and I had a mate make the canvas for me based on the army style so the sides all roll up. The spare wheel carrier is off a Nissan Cabstar truck I think. The tool box and centre console/seat/arm rest I have threaded before. I made the bull bar for a 1970 2A I had before the Defender and just modified it to swap over. the front hurdle just drops in the holes and hooks over the top bar. All the mudflaps are Landy ones just modified so they are stronger and re-enforced and positioned so that they don't allow any mud to be thrown onto the underside. The side steps I also had galvanized. The small side door is what my son calls a 'grandpa door'. Ok I admit it was getting harder to climb in the back so I cut the tray side and made an easy entry door. I am considering upgrading to a Puma Ute but all this will have to be tranferred as I don't want to start all over again and it has become like a right hand as it has proved to be so versatile and useful. Best thing it is virtually indestructable and will last forever. Unlike an ally tray.

Well sorted stealth-I like the hoop storage at front & 0 overhang, any idea what tray weighs less hoops and rear bar? or tare weight?
Unfortunately my 110 would go over GVM if I'd anything but an alloy tray ,though it would ride nicer unladen
re-toolboxes, 2x alum angle welded to tray then boxes bolted between angle ,on vehicle when I bought it

Not sure of the weight. I never weighed it. The hoops are only exhaust tube but the rear bar is heavy wall pipe for load carrying as is the front bar. The drawer underneath also adds a bit of weight. Most of the framework bars are light walled RHS. With the floor being so light I was able to add a bit more strength elsewhere. From memory when I was putting the tray on two people could lift it although I did use a gantry to mount it. With the front hurdle I can carry 8 metres lengths of steel.

Hi,
nicely set-up indeed! Lots of well thought out ideas.
How does the grandpa door fasten to the rest of the side - the holes indicate some sort of pin or bolt would be used, but it is not obvious how/why you have done that.
Or is it that the 'door' opens first and when closed supports the rest of the side?
cheers

With the hood bows in place the rear half of the drivers side is stable and the door locks in place with the swing catch at the front and overlaps the rear half. The hood straps also assist. When the hood and hood bows are not in place there is not much strength in the split side, especially when I carry say a load of sand. I have two bolts that go through the two holes that in these cases bolts the two pieces together. You can see in one of the photos how it works with captive nuts welded in situ on the rear half. It then reverts back to a one piece side.

G'day Wayne!
Thanks for the hooroo mate ... been a long while I know. The truck has been in the workshop for the last month or so awaiting a new dizzy that includes a module to bypass the old external module that spoke to the LPG system - which was clapping out and causing intermittent power surge issues. Apparently that is now fitted and she's running nicely on gas ... waiting on the venturi to be fixed now so the fuel runs as smooth.
How about yourself Wayne ... what's new in the zoo? ;)

I picked up this beast last week. The body is a bit rough, but the engine and drive train seem to be in really good nick. Will hopefully have it rego'd after a few parts arrive next week and then I can get out and have a play :D

Hi,
now that would be handy with the slide-on in a rough camp.
Point it down hill but level across the axles and raise the bed till, well till the bed is level.
Not so far to step up either.

Yep it's a 200 Tdi. Has 265k km on it. I had a Disco with the LT77 in it so already somewhat used to the gearbox, though this one is a lot tighter and better condition than the old Disco's.
I'm thinking about getting rid of the tipper as it's not something that I will ever likely use.

James, just wondering what width your tray is ? Looks wider than the cab. The reason is I'm pondering whether a Trayon camper of width 1980 is too wide for my 130.
thanks

Hi Chris,
That tray is exactly 1800mm wide. I've since swapped it for a Triple M aluminium tray which is a touch wider; 20-40mm perhaps. I personally wouldn't go any wider than this, but that is just a personal opinion. I stuck with 1800 for the one I made for the 130.

From memory the tray on my 120 (supplied new with the vehicle back then) would be about that wide - my memory says it measured 1950mm inside the drop sides. I will check and post back a correction later if I'm mistaken.

Hi Chris
The tray on my 120 is also 1800 wide.
I notice that trayon do 3 different widths of camper with one only 1830 wide. No doubt there is some down sides to the narrower model but after doing the Mount Gill track amongs others in the Flinders I would be hesitant to go much wider.
Creeping past trees close to the track etc.. with the narrow tray at least if the cab fits then you know the tray should to. I guess is really depends on what type of tracks you intend to do but if you are into the harder stuff then keep it narrow would be my advise, particularly with the longer wheel base and wider turning circle of the 130.
Cheers

thanks to the 4 of you - I'd originally planned on getting the 1950 cos that's what the Nissans and Toyos generally go with. It was a shock that after I got the 130 I realized just how much smaller the Landys are in width. I know that can have advantages so I'll have to go with the 1830 as I'm keen on not being restricted and always worrying about slicing the side off ...
Rob, you're right about the turning circle of the 130. Another shock. I've heard that with Disco wheels the turning circle improves but not sure how or why. Spacers also do the job I'm told but apparently illegal.
Looking for a Used 1830 Trayon now - if anyone knows of someone selling I'm happy to take it off their hands
thx again
Chris
ps : Austastar, your Innovan looks a cracker. Never seen one before. I'll look up their site. Every damn Defender I see on this site looks beautiful. Not mine. Unfortunately.

The Discovery wheels must have a different offset, the rims being further out so the front wheels turn further before tyres foul the radius arms. There could be troubles with the load rating of Discovery wheels though, again making them illegal. The 3500kg GVM of the 130 is rather hefty .

Landies are narrower than patrols and cruiser wagons, but wider than LC troopies and trays (landies are same body width, but wider track).
Stock Disco wheel are same offset as 110 wheels. 130 wheels are offset further out (13 mm).
However disco wheels are used because they are wider and can be modified by flipping the centre to achieve better offset, and move the tyres out from the radius arms so allowing more steering lock. But remember increasing track width more than 25mm (13 per side) is not legal (but has benefits).
Wheel spacers are not legal unless they are standard fitment for the vehicle (not landies).

Gotta start somewhere - '96 130 Big Cab destined for a Trayon.
Waiting to fit long-range fuel tanks and some other bits and pieces. Mounting on the chassis needs to be re-welded. Maybe a 40 litre emergency water tank on one side and a tool box on the other.
Wish i could figure out how to attach pics so they are not just thumbnails. Feeble. They are sized 640x480 so that seems right - no ?? I'm clicking on 'attachments' and uploading as per instructions. Help. Seems I'm not alone though.
