Found out today that the ol' transfer case is a wee tad heavy when your flat on ya back & have to catch the bastard . The crazy set up I had on the jack didn't exactly work as planed so we resorted to playing catch.
Tomorow will be fun lifting it back in but that's another day...... Time for some alcohol me thinks!!:D

I still believe that unless you have a hoist and a proper transmission jack then I would still go the engine crane through the passenger door, through the transmission tunnel, and remove the Gear box and transfer in one.
After doing it on my own this way with a disability, it was slower but doable

According to the genuine manual there is a cradle you can make to bolt on to the transfer case to make a level lifting point.

So I made one to fit my trolley jack.

Then I made long slave dowels from headless 10mm bolts so as to prevent seal damage when refitting the transfer.

No catching involved. Not actually that hard to do this way. Just need a smooth surface for the jack to roll on.

They weigh just under 70 kgs with the handbrake drum still on.

Erich, I hope he removed the handbrake drum and backing plate first, Regards Frank.

ah well ended up rolling it onto my chest then just lifted it in....... only to find it wouldn't quite mate up!
Long story short apparently the 1996 t-case has modified internals...:o
So after taking the drive gear out of the case & changing the auto output shaft ( just happened to a spare auto laying around)it all bolted up nicely. Just can hardly move today. :p

yes I do it this way too. I drop it down by the engine crane onto a sheet of plywood on the garage floor. The floor is concrete and I throw a few handfuls of coarse sand and small pebbles onto the floor before putting the ply down. I have to jack the chassis rail up a few inches and then drag the plywood out with complete unit sitting on it. The transmission sitting on the ply drags very easy across the sand and pebbles on the concrete floor. :D Reinstalling is the reverse process...

Bee utey, a damn good idea making those dowls. "Makes note to do likewise next time the transmission is split..."
