View Full Version : Mith Hitch + Hayman Reese

My wife and I just purchased a 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S for the purpose of towing our Offroad Caravan said to be completed early next year. I have been searching the forums here for hitch options and would appreciate some comments and guidance on my decision. I’d like to use the Mitchell Bros hitch receiver to minimise departure angle restrictions in conjunction with the versatility of the Hayman Reese adjustable hitch & weight distributors (my vehicle does not have the air bags). Is this combination a practical option or am i missing something .

Yes I read the thread thankyou Garrycol however I saw no full & direct answer to the question I have posted here regarding the compatibility of the two systems. I was tempted to post my question in that thread but didn’t want to be seen to be hijacking it but in hindsight regret not doing so...apologies. Forgive my stupidity but I guess I’m simply looking for some reassurance that i have made the right decision. After visiting a local Haymen Reese supplier today and asking the same question i was steered in the direction of a Hayman Reese Towbar @ $985 + $810 for the hitch & weight distributors so before opting out of the Hayman Reese bar for the Mitch Hitch @ $630 I’d I’d simply like some reassurance that my interpretation of the information i have found here is correct.

If towing an off road van on anything other than just dirt roads you are better with the Mitch Hitch. Also you won't have to unhitch the van to get at the spare.

Thanks CaverD3, the Mitch Hitch (receiver) is definitely my preferred choice however I need a compatible (preferably height adjustable) WDH to fit to it. The Haymen Reese I have mentioned states in the product guide “The 550lb, 750lb and the 1000lb WDH kits can only be used with a Hayman Reese Hitch Receiver Towbar to safely tow trailers with a ball weight in excess of 130kg.” Hence my concern over compatibility (I’d like to keep within the bounds of the law particularly for insurance purposes). If the HR is not suitable any suggestions on other WDH options would be appreciated.

I think you will find that means: HR will take no responsibility if you use someone elses WDH. Legally there is nothing to stop you another one.
I am sure there are some who use WDHs with the Mitch Hitch.
No problem as you have springs not air but with air susp it is not advisable to use a WDH as it can counteract the air susp system.

Hi Dreamn and welcome,
Like you, I have a coil-sprung D3.

I have, also, fitted the "Mitch Hitch". It is rated to tow 3500kg and up to a 350kg towball weight.

I had been given to believe that the adjustable hitch that I got with the c'van (private sale) was a Hayman Reese, but have been unable to find it on their website. Perhaps it has been discontinued (or wasn't Hayman Reese in the first place). It was, however, a wdh unit (which was critically important with my D1).

However, with my D3 (admittedly with a spring lift), while carrying the wdh around, I have never felt the need to use them.

In summary, provided that the tow hitch is adjustable such as to give your 'van the right attitude, go for it.

Hi Bushwanderer. Thanks for the input. Mitch Hith + HR it is then. I’ll order my hitch early next week and have my D3 scheduled for a 2” – 2 ½” lift including struts at Dobinsons next Wednesday.

Re Springs: When I had mine done, the only ones available were King Springs. I fitted these while keeping the original shocks. Very pleased with the result.
