Advice on air con operation, someone with original TDI factory fitted

HI just got an original air con (from the wreckers) fitted in my 93 defender. Last few days it has been great, very cold which surprised me as I haven't heard a good thing about them. I noticed this morning it came on for a while, then the cooling seem to fade off, fan was still going though. When the cool dies off seems to blow very humid air too. I have the thermo turned up full. Pulled in to do some shopping and back in the car around lunchtime and air con pumping cold again for an hour or so while driving around. I got in the car again this afternoon and again came on initially and then faded out again. Like I said, fan blowing ok still but just not cold.

Just wondering would it be cutting out on thermostat? Normally if you have thermo up high it should blow cold all the time. Is this how they're meant to work or can any one advise? I'm sure the compressor is ok and gas is fine, otherwise wouldn't work sometimes and other times not. I'd be happy to over ride / hotwire the thermo switch so it was cold all the time

The Hi/Lo pressure switch may be set for R12 operation and unable to cope with higher pressures from the new gas. Or it may simply be faulty. It is usually found on the high pressure line from the condenser to the cabin, near or on the receiver dryer. The condenser in front of the rad may be undersized or partly blocked too.

Have the pressures checked again by the a/c expert on a hot day.

Sounds pretty normal to me, from what I can gather they operate fine for a while and then freeze up.

Exactly what mine does..freezes up after about an hour..mine even blows ice chips out of the passenger side vent..then slows to nothing and the cabin gets humid.

When I stop, a stack of water flows out of the evaporter via the over flow pipe onto the ground...

I set my temp control at about the '3oclock' position. That brings air to the drivers side at about 6 degrees C, and stops the condenser from freezing up. Don.

I don't think it's freezing up because it can do it 5 minutes after starting
