Just caught ABC news to night and they mentioned that Ipswich Council was holding Carols tonight and the RAAF were putting on a special Dump & Burn before the F-111s are retired this week.
Bolted up to Ipswich just in time to see the show.
What a RUSH!
I hadn’t see one live before and the guy kept it burning while he circled 3 times around the city.
An amazing sight and a shame they are now to be retired.

This was the last night time Dump and Burn, there will be one over Amberly next week, Friday I think. That is their last flying day, they will be withdrawn from service at the end of the year.:(
cheers, Mick.

I know I've said this before------------
but why are we buying a fighter?
has our threat matrix changed in the last 30 years??

According to Channel 7 news this evening, 11.30 am next Friday a formation of F-111s will take off from Amberley and fly over Ipswich and Brisbane, the formation will then break into 2 groups...one will fly over the Gold Coast while the other will do a sortie over the Sunshine Coast, they will then line up and "attack" Amberley then land and.... "that will be that"
No doubt...followed by drinking, in moderation of course, and much reminiscing in the mess I suspect... as there should be ;)

Ahhh! the answer to that question resides in the voluminous reports which are published as white papers etc. It's not just a "fighter" as such but a "platform". Said platform carries 'surprise packets' which it launches from a relatively safe distance and surprise packet finds its own way to where it's intended to go... lowers risk to platform, pilot and navigator who hopefully live to fight another day ...

Does anyone know what is to become of them once grounded? Father is member of ex RAAF association who enquirer some time ago about acquiring one to put up as a static memorial. Were told no decision as to what was to happen to them had been made. They were though told a fee of $1m AU would be required to prep the aircraft prior to any hand over so start fund raising now.

lets hope then, the surprise packets of the threat don't have a better range than our surprise packets. Or perhaps there platforms don't out number our platforms.

Threats have ever thus served as deterrents with constant posturing ...all the while hoping that the final step of 'put up or shut up' will never be realised... war games are reminiscent of an international 'harka':angel: ...if only it were that simple...

The F-111 is the John Farnham of the skies. I'm sure they'll be keeping a serviceable one stashed away to thrill the kiddies periodically.

I'm sure truck bombs in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel didn't figure in our threat matrix in the 1980s.

No they won't be keeping any serviceable solmanic. It keeps all the ones we have to ensure we have a few aircraft flying at any one time. They are just getting too expensive to maintain and airframes are runningour of hours.
As for what's being done with them.. the bulk of them are f1-11G's all are being scrapped / destroyed / shredded. This was part of the rpiginal purchase agreement with the USA as they are "neuclear arms capabble". As if anmyone would get hold of one from a static display and use it for that purpose.... Anyway it''s a damn shame.
From what I understand the others will end up
1. As static displays at Air Force bases
2. In museums. I have no idea on what basis the ADF is makign the call on WHO gets them, but you can be sure that there will be a reqyuirement for a significant sum of money to change hands in most cases.

uumm no you didnt
The last batch of F1-11 were a donation with strings ( and new motors) that sort of came about when the yanks agreed to sell some more modern fighters ( and the factory to build them) to a nation not so far away. whose population had been wiped up to chanting in the streets" Australia much land no people, ( we) much people no land" add to that the purchases of 100 plus navel ships from the former USSR BLA BLA

Beleive it or not they are actually running an Defence Force, not a kids circus. There's no way in hell they will keep one serviceable, including all teh mechanical work and TRAINING of both mechs and pilots and keeping pilots current on type (hours required) etc etc for a few PR stunts.
Take my word for it.

Father in Law is ex-wing commander. They are dead & buried Which I think is a pity..... why don't we all chip in & buy one, can't be any more expensive than owning a Land Rover.....lol.

They were a great aircraft, but they are long overdue for retirement.
They were developed and first flew when the Series 11A was a new car, the Rolling Stones started, and the Owen gun was still in service
Looking forward to seeing them do the fly over on Friday though.
