View Full Version : Egr valve I think. Again. And vacuum pump.

I'm having trouble with the egr valve on my puma I think. Really bad throttle response and lag at each gear change. Hunting idle speed and more often than not if I stop the engine and restart it within 30 odd seconds it starts and then stalls. Any thoughts.
And has anyone tried driving a puma with it unplugged. Does it run?
Also all you people who have had a vacuum pump go did you get any warning? Mine has a small haze of oil on the left hand side just behind the pulley.
Should I be worried?

Yes, that's the Vac pump warning I got too.

I believe if you unplug the EGR the MIL (check engine) will illuminate and put you in limp mode.

P.S. The coffee is fantastic :D

Marking on the drivway, haze on underside of bonnet. That will be the pump. +me on the EGR.

My 2007 Defender is just out of warranty. Still has the original pump but it will probably fail. Thought about carrying one as a spare.

Priced one at a dealer in Melbourne the other day. $450.00 dollars just for the pump plus fitting. Ouch!

Have a look at getting one from the UK, for example ($171.89 + Shipping):

Nice. Does anyone know how easy it is to fit. Seems like the belt tensioner etc etc needs to come off? Bleeding? Oil?

Double ouch!! My new work vehicle is to be picked up on Wednesday. It is a Ford Transit:(

Maybe I can keep the Defender going with Transit parts and the Transit going with Defender parts.:)

Sorry, I have not had to fit and EGR or pump yet so can't give any useful info on this.

Tim, thanks for the U.K. pricing on the pump. Seems good value unlike Australian prices.

:(:(:(

Just to let you guys know we can access the EGR valve and relevant gaskets as well the vacuum pump and gaskets. Our price for the pump would be similar to that quoted for dispatch from the UK however ours is dispatching from Perth - much cheaper freight to your door than from overseas. If you'd like me to quote just flick me a PM or an email with your VIN so I can be certain on part numbers :)

Thanks Sarah, I was unaware you could supply engine parts etc, it's good to know we can get these parts locally at reasonable prices!

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the in formation on products you supply. I will keep you in mind when it comes to purchasing these items. I was not aware that non-dealer Puma parts were starting to become available now and that we are now not totally locked in to the dealer pricing. It is good to know. It is also good that we can support Australian suppliers who can sell items at a competitive price.

seems now the truck is throwing up a fault code. an internal electrical fault in the ECU, so rare that LRA are getting one out from UK. and we will see what happens.
let the electrickery begin.

when you say EGR I first think Exhaust Gas Return if not do pumas hav them and if so is it worth while blocking it off ?

Yep, it's exactly that.

The Puma has an annoying ECU-controlled EGR, which means you can't just blank it off like on the Td5. If you do, the Engine Malfunction Light comes on & stays on.

BAS has now developed an ECU remap that basically tells the EGR valve to stay shut, see this thread on the UK forum:Defender2 - View topic - EGR shut to minimium tuning upgrade available at BAS & I (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic4681.html)

Damn I wish it was as easy as bridging or open circuiting the contact :( it would give more power and longer engine life as well am I correct ?

I'll be taking the book of words with me to see if there isnt the potential for a simple fix.

Here's some info from Ford on how to inspect a EGR valve for internal damage:

It mentions about a potentiometer (variable resistor) im asuming the egr has different positions which is determined by a millivolt (mV) or milliampere (mA) siginal if so just say 20mA is produced when valve is fully closed find out the resistance at that point and bridge it with a fixed resistor of that resistance to simulate fully closed all the time! I doubt it will be that easy though because it will probably have to meet other parameters also :(
