Hi all, just a quick question about steering on my rangie. I did an allignment over the weekend and it steers heaps better but still if u accelerate (worst in 2nd) then hit the clutch to change gears it wants to turn right by itself ??? Maybe torque steer? Maybe as revs drop it affects p.steering pump? Help!

Hey Rat check the bushes in the trailing arms if the are badly worn it can cause what i call rear steer pulling the car in either direction depending on which bush is worn. This is from experience in my own rangie but not necessarily the problem with yours but worth checking.
Cheers Darren

I agree 100% with Darren.... fairly common issue. Try driving straight on a nice flat section of road, and closing and opening the throttle. Does it change direction?

i think it is terminally unrepairable and you should flick the car to someone as soon as you can get rid of it, before it steers right into another truck.:(

if you like maybe i can help by taking it off your hands.:D

Thanks all. I replaced the bushes on the rear trailing arms. The ones with the three bolts through the chassis and one big one on the trailing arm end itself. Didn't help:( Can the eqivalent bushes on the front arms to the chassis do it? Yes Pete, if u on a flat road, then accel and decel it turns right on decel and left on accel. This wouldnt happen in a Defender;) They drive basically by themselves.....Also i noticed that when the car is cold the clutch pedal barely has enough action to work but improves when things are worn. I will bleed it and see if it improves.

I told you this was a stock characteristic!

Unfortunately it is more likely a combo of many things, low roll stifness, large tyres, and a bit of a lift. All my rangies have had the same steering issue.

I have changed EVERY bush in my vehicles with almost no real improvement.

I eventually got used to it... :(

sounds like bump steer in the rear from having it too high and springs too soft

longer rear trailing arms help fix it a lot

What sort of lift is it running?
Check all the bushes including the front control arms and panhard rod bushes. How are your A frame bushes at the top and the ball itself?

Cant say I have noticed a rangie doing it before.

I've pulled out the radius arms on the front diff. The bushes are worn. Also steering arm is bent and the Steering damper is seized. I will have it back together Friday or Saturday I hope. I've also put in front dislocation cones and long bilstein shocks to improve it's on road manners. They shouldn't change it's offroad ability much. They're about an inch shorter than the ones that were in there.

I've got all the parts back now. Radius arms with new army spec bushes, new other rubbery bush things, and a new steering damper. I will maybe, hopefully, have it back together Sunday morning. I always go to the Land Rover church on Sunday mornings to bathe in the holy gear oil.

All done. Still flexes up good. Not as much as before but close. At least the brake lines don't stretch now. I may order some dropped shocky mounts for it with some diff and steering guards and long brake hoses. Maybe a super charger too, if I can talk Rat Woman into it :(

Looks good - have the steering issues gone?

Yes. Minor issues left but I put them down to having 35" tyres! Drives a lot better. Maybe a little play in steering box but nothing to worry about right now.

This steering issue must be contagious
On the weekend whilst driving Cheeky, she refused to turn Right (much) and I ran wide in the Right corner I was taking. :o
Upon turning left she seemed to unlock and then full Right deflection was restored.?????????:confused::confused:

I was putting it down to the steering box, which has taken up the habit of drinking fluid.

Having a little lye down under the car and Cheryl working the steering, the real culprit became clear.

The U-Bolts which hold the Steering Damper to the Drag Link had become loose and the Drag Link was moving through the U-Bolts. Eventually the Damper had reached full extension. At this point the U-Bolts caught and stopped the Drag Link moving any further; therefore the Locking effect in the Steering.

Simple fix but a dangerous situation

Maybe incorporate it with a "Country of Origin" BBQ feast at our place and free use of the hoist etc.

Just a thought

Sounds great Justin. When are u offering?

Great idea Justin

Josh and I have learned that we need to do this probably after every trip/comp.

Every time we find something loose - nothing fallen off yet (touch wood) - except for a caliper bolt.

We know others in comp work have found even with lock tight and new bolts stuff just comes loose. So a clean and check a great idea - and Justin's hoist would make it a lot easier and probably find more as a result.
