View Full Version : D4 Opposite Lock Bullbar - Fitted Today

Hi all,
Well, my bar was finally fitted today by Scott and the boys at OL in Mitcham. They did a great job.
Took around 4 1/2 hours all up.
Made no difference to the handling at all.
Here are some pics.

I was going to order the ARB, but they were taken off the market for some reason (at least that's what I was told).

Disco4SE,

A couple of questions.

1. Is that bar colour coded ? the vehicle looks silver, but in the photos the bar looks white ?;

2. As an estimate how much further than the normal bumper does the bar protrude, my garage is a bit of a tight fit length wise which is why I am asking, i.e is it noticeable ?

3. The cut outs on the top of the bar, what do you intend installing there ?

All up it looks great.

Regards,

George

Hi George,
Some answers to your queries.
1. The bar is powdercoated to a colour as close as possible to the vehicle colour. In my case, the bar turned out more grey than silver (Zermatt Silver). I intend to get it matched by my spray painter.

2. My guess is about 150mm.

3. At this stage, I don't intend to fit driving lights or anything else.

Cheers, Craig

I cant speak for Craig but a large part of my decision was based on the $500 diffence i was quoted between the two suppliers :).

Thank for the pics Craig. I'm satisfied now that I've made the correct decision. The powder coater called today to say mine was ready. Now to have OL fit it.

Thanks Craig,

My D3 is Zermatt Silver which is why I asked the question on colour.

Hi George,
Booked my Disco in today to have the bar colour matched.
I suppose that having it powdercoated, then spray painted is a double precaution. Still works out cheaper than the ARB.

Hey Craig, nice bar.

Did OL fit the rubber molding under the headlights or did you?

From your photos I notice that there appears to be an aerial tab welded to the top tube on the passenger side. Can you confirm?
If so, then that is one better than the ARB bar, cause mine doesn't have one! And I miss it! The ARB bar only has a predrilled hole for an aerial in each of the bar wings.

I noticed from Duck's Guts post in the ARB Bullbar thread that it still isn't possible to remove the headlights with the ARB Bullbar fitted.

Do you know if the Opposite Lock Bullbar allows removal of the headlight without needing to remove the Bullbar?

Not sure about this one.
You could ring Opposite Lock in Albany WA and speak to Peter. He would be able to tell you.

Hi Ducks,
Yes, OL fitted the rubber moulding under the headlights as part of the bar.
The bar has 2 aerial tabs welded to the top of the tube on the passenger side (next to each other) and 1 on the drivers side.

ARB still thin the lights can come out on the D3 bar so they wouldn.t have bothered to change the design for the D4. They will come out..........until you install the washer jets.

Never thought to try removing the washer jets.

To remove the washer jets is a bit of a mission...you have to remove the black stone trays under the bar to get access. Same story to adjust the fog lights or to change a blown bulb in the winch bar parking lights or blinkers.

Wasn't what I meant.
Should have said: "..........until they install the washer jets
Halogen lights don't come with the jets so they probably designed it before they thought about the jets.
You are better taking the plastc bit off the back of the lights to remove the lights through the bar.

Had my OL bar fitted last week - still not entirely complete as OL are waiting for more of the rubber inserts for below the headlights. But thought these pics might help augment those Craig provided. Very happy with the bar at this stage. Looks good on the vehicle, but most importantly should offer decent protection from the big hoppers.

Also, what spot lights have you fitted?

My fitment was not straightforward, as it seems an incorrect passenger-side under-bar protection plate may have been provided (still being investigated by OL). So, don't judge by my time (about 9 hours, of which at least 3 was wasted on modifying the offending plate) - I think Craig said his took about 4 or 5 hours.

And the lights are Lightforce Genesis 210's - I bought the halogens as I felt the HID's were beyond my price range. One is a spot and the other a spreader. They have a brilliant adjustable mounting system that allows the lights to be installed well back, where they actually get some protection from the bar. I went with Lightforce in part because I'd had them before (a different model) and had a good run with them, and in part because they are so light in weight - and I did not want to add too much to the extra kilos hanging off the front end.

Just a quick update on a couple of matters related to the OL bar for the D4:

Apparently the rubber inserts for below the headlights have been slightly redesigned "to fit even better", and these will now not be available until sometime in January. And with regard to the passenger side under-body washer-bottle protection plate that did not fit properly in my case (and apparently others too) - OL have acknowledged there is an issue here, and are also redesigning these so they fit without modification.

There's a short story worth telling re this last matter: following an email exchange over the last couple of weeks since my bar was fitted, and then a personal phone call from one of OL's head honchos, they have agreed to recompense the local business here in Albany who spent 3 hours extra making this plate fit for me. It's easy to say "well, so they should" - but these days few companies bother with that kind of service, so I think it's worth acknowledging OL for the way they've dealt with this situation.

The OL bar is a 'dead ringer' for the ARB bar - even has the indent on the right hand side of the number plate where the ARB decal goes. The ARB bar also has the same issues with the water bottle, (which I know from the experience of chewing up hours fitting mine) so I wonder if there has been some cloning done. But overall the OL bar would appear to be ahead of the ARB bar in regards to the moulding below the lights and surrounds for the for lamps.

Indeed the OL bar is - ummm - unusually similar to the ARB item. Agree re the OL job being tidier around the various lights, but leaving the indentation for the name plate was a bit of an oversight - first thing we spotted! Interesting that ARB had the same drama with the water bottle - just goes to show you need to be careful what you clone...

Ron / Craig - OL supplies the fog lights with the bar. I noticed my old ones are still in the bumper unit (which is now stashed under the house). This may explain why they look better fitted / finished? Can't comment on whether they're any good - fog is a rare thing over here.

Difference is in an animal strike the ARB fog lights are behind the bar and survive!

On the OL bar the wear the brunt!

They both had issues with the washer bottle location on the D4, against the D3 bar, which they were modelled on. I understand you can fabricate around this, which some readers have had done, but revised bars are the on the way. Perhaps due to ARB withdrawing their bar first, they have had time to act on a fix.

Will be interested to see whether they've changed anything other than the protection plate around the washer bottle. I know that's being altered because they used mine to test a prototype on a couple of weeks ago. They also tested new rubber inserts for below the headlights, and I understand we should be receiving them in the next week or two - at last!

The OL bar saved damaging the front of the D4 a few times over the weekend.
One rut was that deep that a Patrol was hung up with neither front wheel on the ground and a Hilux tore the front bumper off. I went in on an angle and ploughed through the mud with the bullbar. No damage done apart from a slight graze of paint off the bar. Best of all, I got to snatch the Patrol out :)
Other occassions, I had to brush up against small trees and scrub with no damage to the body.
Cheers, Craig
